The St. John’s University Staten Island Campus Chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) has again earned Gold Chapter Honors, after receiving Gold Honors in 2018, Silver Honors in 2017, and Bronze Honors in 2016. NSSLHA Chapter Honors are awarded by the National Executive Council to local chapters that demonstrate a commitment to NSSLHA's core values: philanthropy, community service, career awareness, advocacy, and networking.
Chapters receiving Honors at the Gold level have increased awareness of communication disorders among state and federal legislators, created vibrant online conversations in the NSSLHA community, and raised and donated money to provide scholarships to students in Communication Sciences and Disorders programs.
The St. John’s Staten Island chapter will receive a Recognition Ribbon at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in Orlando, FL in November 2019, and will be featured in the NSSLHA e-newsletter, website, and blog.
The award letter from NSSLHA commends the chapter for sharing “the gift of leadership, while demonstrating that the future of the professions is filled with strong leaders who are committed to serving and advocating for their clients.”
The St. John’s Staten Island NSSLHA Chapter President for the 2018-2019 academic year was Desiree Adone ‘19C and the faculty advisor is Assistant Professor Gary E. Martin, Ph.D.
“Through the St. John’s NSSLHA chapter, I have learned leadership, professionalism, and the true meaning of hard work,” said Ms. Adone, who will begin the M.A. program in Speech-Language Pathology at St. John’s in fall 2019. “After a long year of dedication, I am proud to say my Executive Board and I have received gold chapter honors for the second year in a row! I am so grateful to have been a part of such a great organization and am looking forward to my graduate studies at St. John's in the fall.”
