Celebrating International Education week and diversity in our community.
On November 11, St. John's University Staten Island campus hosted the University of Liberia Alumni Chorus for its annual "One in Song" scholarship benefit concert. St. Johns' campus leaders Dr. James O'Keefe and Dr. Robert Fanuzzi welcomed the President of the University of Liberia Alumni Society, and over 500 friends and families for a festive evening of African music and educational inspiration. The concert kicked off the campus's International Education week and was supported by the Staten Island campus's Office of Student Life.
Highlights of the evening included a special award and performance by the Broadway and television star Saycon Sengbloh, speeches by past and current University of Liberia Presidents, and stirring performances of West African songs that united the audience. SJU student members of Black Student Union, Multicultural Society, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and OxFam were on hand to volunteer and support the campus's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Staten Island is home to the largest community of Liberian immigrants in North America. University of Liberia alumni from over ten states traveled to St. John's for a truly global reunion. "This will always be remembered as the night Liberia came to St. John's," Dr. Fanuzzi declared in his closing remarks.
As a global and metropolitan university, St. John's is proud to have hosted an international univeristy that has deep roots in its local community.
