According to a nationwide study, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Master of Science in Education at St. John’s ranks eighth among the top graduate programs in the field.

Landing in the top 10 among schools that included Boston College, the University of Wisconsin, Johns Hopkins University, and Penn State, St. John’s University was cited in the study.com ranking for its internships and flexibility in scheduling and admission requirements.

“We’re extremely proud of this ranking,” said Michael Sampson, Ph.D., Dean of The School of Education. “It shows that students—and the institutions that employ our graduates—recognize the excellence of our faculty, our program, and the training they provide.” The study’s results also were published by the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), the leading national organization for licensed clinical counselors.

Other criteria used in creating the study.com ranking were program structure and curriculum, types of clinical education and training opportunities, faculty composition and tenure, student demographics, size of the university, size of class, and employment rates.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at St. John’s is a 60-credit course of study leading to an M.S. in education. Current and aspiring mental health counselors learn to assume leadership and advocacy roles in the field; to strengthen their competency as caring and competent mental health counselors for clients of all ages; and to teach other mental health counselors how to diagnose and treat culturally diverse clients and communities.

“We are a top school for mental health counselors to be trained,” noted Dr. Sampson, “not only because we are both state and nationally accredited, but because 100 percent of our graduates are hired upon graduation—with the majority of students receiving job offers before graduation.”

Study.com provides educational and professional information for millions of prospective students seeking academic preparation for their desired fields.
