Each year, St. John’s organizes various academic, social, and spiritual activities to engage and enlighten the University community. Here is a sampling from this year’s calendar.
New Student Convocation/Faculty Convocation
Wes Moore, author of the assigned freshman book, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, spoke at New Student Convocation in Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday, August 30. Later that day, Joan Ball, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Marketing, addressed the Faculty Convocation in Taffner Field House. The annual events welcome new students and faculty to campus as well as those who are returning for the new academic year.
Oktoberfest
All alumni—and their families—are welcome to attend St. John’s fourth annual Oktoberfest, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, at Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square, NY.
Lewis Avenue Reunion Mass and Brunch
Alumni from St. John’s historic Lewis Avenue campus—and their families—are invited back to alma mater for the 59th annual Lewis Avenue Reunion, at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 2. Mass takes place in St. Thomas More Church, with brunch immediately following at the D’Angelo Center.
McCallen Society Annual Recognition Mass and Luncheon
The McCallen Society is the distinguished gift society whose members honor the St. John’s legacy by including the University in their estate and financial plans. It is named for the late Rev. Thomas J. McCallen, C.M., who spearheaded the University’s move from Lewis Avenue to the Queens campus. The annual McCallen Society Mass and luncheon take place on Tuesday, October 11. Mass is celebrated at 12:15 p.m. in St. Thomas More Church; lunch follows at the D’Angelo Center.
Open Houses
St. John’s growing reputation continues to attract prospective students from across the country and the world. The purpose of the Open House events is to provide students and their families with a close look at life and learning at the University. This year’s Open Houses take place on Saturday, October 15, and Sunday, November 20 (Queens campus); as well as Saturday, October 22 (Staten Island campus).
President’s Dinner
Launched in 1998, the President’s Dinner is the premier event of our academic year. The dinner’s purpose is to generate scholarship support for St. John’s students while honoring distinguished alumni and friends with the University’s Spirit of Service Award. This year’s dinner takes place on Thursday, October 27, at the Waldorf Astoria New York, in Midtown Manhattan.
Beyond the Bicentennial: The Promise of Vincentian Higher Education
Through the collaboration of three major Vincentian universities (St. John’s, DePaul, and Niagara), this two-day conference marks the 200th anniversary of the Vincentians in the United States. The event takes place November 11–12 at the Marriott New York East Side. Attendance is by invitation only.

St. John’s University Announces Commencement 2026 Honorees
St. John’s University will hold its Undergraduate-Level Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 18, at 10 a.m. on the Great Lawn. The Most Reverend Richard G. Henning, S.T.D., D.D. ’86SJC, ’88M.A., Archbishop of Boston, MA, will serve as this year’s speaker and be conferred an honorary degree during the ceremony.
