For The McCarricks, It's All About Family

July 5, 2013

The McCarrick family has always been connected to St. John's University in a very special way, so it was not surprising that John J. McCarrick III, '64CBA, '71GEd left a provision in his will for the establishment of a scholarship in his name at his alma mater. "Our father taught at St. John's and was Assistant Dean of the College of Business Administration for several years," recalled Thomas McCarrick "My sister Kathleen (McCarrick) Fagan '67Ed and my brothers James '73NDC and Kevin '80CBA all graduated from St. John's, so the connection to the University is really strong for many of us."

What makes their ties to St. John's even more unique is the fact that their great uncle was Rev. Thomas J. McCallen, C.M., former treasurer of the University and the beloved Vincentian for whom the McCallen Society is named. "Fr. McCallen was my father's mother's brother," said Kathleen, "which makes him our great uncle. He visited us quite regularly, and we always had a wonderful time with him."

Thomas and James McCarrick attended the recent McCallen Society Annual Recognition Mass and Luncheon and were surprised by the many changes that had taken place since their student days. "That event was really well-done," noted James. "Tom and I were really impressed by how the campus looks now. Because our brother left plans to establish his scholarship, the John J. McCarrick, III Memorial Scholarship Fund will continue our family's involvement with St. John's in the future. We're all very pleased with that."
