After serving as Provost of St. John’s University since 2012, Robert A. Mangione ’77P, ’79GP, ’93PD, ’99Ed.D., announced that he will be stepping down from that position to return to faculty, effective July 1, 2018.

“I am personally grateful for Bob’s leadership, advice, and friendship,” said Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, Ph.D., President of St. John’s. “His passion for the success of our students, faculty, administrators and staff is evident in his commitment and dedication to make St. John’s a better university.”

Dr. Mangione earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Pharmacy from the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and a professional diploma and doctorate in Education from The School of Education. In 1979, he joined the faculty in the College of Pharmacy and was promoted to Professor in 1990. In 1999, he was appointed as Dean.

“It has been an honor for me to try to live up to the great standards that were set by our previous provosts,” said Dr. Mangione. “I have tried my very best to continue their legacy of strong leadership and service.”

Dr. Mangione has more than 100 publications in various journals and his most recent work focuses on the field of celiac disease and adverse effects of gluten in medication. A beloved teacher and mentor, he was the first recipient of the Vincentian Mission Award when it was created in 1993.

“I look forward to returning to the faculty as a professor in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,” he said. “I am excited about returning to the classroom and to also expanding my research and service activities.”

The University will begin a national search for its next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. During this transition, Senior Vice Provost Simon Moller will serve as the Interim Provost.  Dr. Moller was appointed to his current administrative role in the Office of the Provost in 2014.

“We will continue to benefit from the strong academic foundation Dr. Mangione has built during his many years of service as faculty, Dean, and Provost,” said Dr. Gempesaw. “St. John’s has emerged as a stronger institution because of his leadership and many contributions in support of our strategic priorities.”
