Social Justice

We believe that giving back to the community teaches us lessons that can only be learned by serving, lessons that deepen our faith.

Rooted in its Vincentian mission, St. John's University champions social justice as a core value; empowering students, faculty, and staff to advocate for equity, inclusion, and human dignity. Through academic programs, community engagement, and campus initiatives, the university fosters a culture of compassion and action, preparing students to become ethical leaders who serve the common good.

Johnnies Vote

Johnnies Vote is an initiative to support the St. John’s University community in practicing the right to vote. Various workshops, tabling events, and social media campaigns serve to bring important registration and voter information, as well as resources for helping individuals form their own opinions on local and federal issues.

Conserve to Serve

A student-led Instagram with the initiative to reduce food waste and address food insecurity and hunger on campus. University community members can take part in three easy steps! One: Attend an event or meeting. Two: See leftover and salvageable food? Snap a picture. Three: Send it to us on @conserve2serve. Including location, time, and description with your photo.

Good Food

Good Food is a day-long signature event hosted by Institute for Vincentian Impact & Campus Ministry. Throughout five sessions, students explore food through different lenses to further develop a holistic relationship with food and food justice. The sessions include Facts & Trivia; Nutrition Research from our in-house dietitian; Information session from a professional advocate for food justice; a practical workshop on budgeting and meal planning; a final session to conclude the day with kitchen prep & cooking before we sit down together to share a meal and food for thought on community and belonging.

Student Outreach Leaders (SOLs)

Student Outreach Leaders are formed through intensive training at the start of a new academic year. Training equips the students for their professional development through leading University Service Day events, advocating on Capitol Hill, and leading an advocacy project on their assigned Plunge/Immersion trip. The SOLs are transformed in Mission, learning important skills in negotiation, nonviolent communication, servant leadership, and project management.
