St. John’s Fulbright Recipient Looks Forward to New Experiences
Michael Benjamin ’16C, ’17G was a commuter student at St. John’s. Though he enjoyed spending his days on campus and evenings at home, he was eager to begin a new academic experience this summer—living and learning in a rural district of the Slovak Republic.
History Department Recognized for Career Diversity
St. John’s University’s doctoral program in World History was recognized by the American Historical Association (AHA) as part of its Career Diversity for Historians initiative. Four faculty members from SJU: Associate Professor and History Graduate Director Nerina Rustomji, Ph.D.; Professor and Chair Dolores Augustine, Ph.D.; Associate Professor Lara Vapnek, Ph.D.; and Associate Professor Kristin Szylvian, Ph.D. will join faculty members from 36 other history departments around the United States to discuss emerging models for preparing doctoral students for a diverse range of careers and to share resources for integrating career diversity into graduate curricula.

Biology Professor Wins First NIH Grant to Combat ALS
Though Wan Seok Yang, Ph.D., is only in his second year at St. John’s University as an assistant professor of Biological Sciences, he has already been awarded his first National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant for the research proposal, “Determination of Cell Death Pathways Activated in ALS.” The amount of the award is $492,000 and extends for three years until 2020, at which point Yang may apply for another NIH grant with a larger funding amount. The current grant is part of the Support of Competitive Research (SCORE) Pilot Project Award (SC2) program.

Professor Becomes Double Grant Recipient for Sustainability Research
After a semester’s research leave working on her project, “Industrial Entanglements: The Black River as Political Ecological Agent in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica,” Associate Professor of Anthropology Anne M. Galvin, Ph.D., has secured two separate grants to support her continued work in this area. One, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Global Research Grant, is being offered for the first time at St. John’s University. The other is a prestigious postdoctoral research grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the preeminent source of grant funding for international anthropological research.
Long Island Graduate Center to Open in Hauppauge, NY
In an effort to maintain a strong educational presence on Long Island, St. John’s University has leased 11,000 square feet of space for its new Long Island Graduate Center in Hauppauge, NY. The Suffolk County site replaces St. John’s former Oakdale campus.
