A Legacy in Motion: 25 Years of the Peter J. Tobin College of Business

A quarter century ago, a defining moment reshaped the trajectory of business education at St. John’s University. In 2000, the College of Business Administration was renamed The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, honoring a visionary leader whose generosity and industry insight would leave a lasting imprint on generations of students. The historic $10.25 million gift from Peter J. Tobin ’65CBA, ’96HON marked more than a new name. It signaled the beginning of a modern era grounded in innovation, experiential learning, and a global outlook.

Yet the story of Tobin stretches far beyond that milestone. Established in 1927 as the School of Accounting, Commerce, and Finance, the business school has long reflected the Vincentian mission of education with purpose. Through decades of growth and reinvention, the College evolved alongside New York City’s dynamic business landscape, preparing students not only for careers, but for leadership grounded in integrity and impact.

A respected banking executive who served as Chief Financial Officer for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company, Chemical Bank, and Chase Manhattan Bank, Mr. Tobin brought to his leadership a rare blend of industry insight and academic commitment. His priorities were forward-looking: expand academic programs, elevate faculty expertise, and strengthen the College’s standing within the broader business landscape. Perhaps most significantly, his vision helped usher in the integration of The College of Insurance into Tobin in 2001. Today known as The Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science, the addition established St. John’s first Manhattan campus and deepened the College’s presence within the financial capital of the world.

Over the past quarter century, Tobin has evolved into a place where learning is defined not only by theory, but by experience. Experiential education has become a signature element of the College’s identity, reflecting the belief that leadership is cultivated through action. Students travel beyond borders through Global Destination Courses, engaging directly with international markets and cultures. Through the Executive-In-Residence Program (EIRP), they collaborate with industry professionals on consulting projects that demand strategic thinking and creative problem-solving.

The ethos of purpose-driven learning extends even further through student-led initiatives. In the Global Loan Opportunities for Budding Entrepreneurs (GLOBE) program, students manage microloans that support entrepreneurs in developing communities, merging financial acumen with social impact. Student-Managed Investment Funds (SMIF) offer hands-on exposure to the complexities of portfolio management.

As the business world continues to change, Tobin’s commitment to holistic development remains central. The recent launch of the Wirth Center for Professional Development represents the next evolution of that vision, integrating professionalism, communication, and executive presence into the academic journey. It is a reminder that the College’s legacy is not static, but constantly unfolding.

The results of this evolution are reflected in national recognition, with Tobin ranked among the nation’s leading undergraduate finance and business programs, and the Greenberg School continuing to earn distinction within the field of insurance education. Yet beyond rankings and milestones lies a deeper story: one of a community shaped by shared values, innovation, and a collective belief in the power of education to transform lives.

“As Tobin celebrates its 25th anniversary—and as the College of Business approaches its centennial in 2027—we are reminded of the extraordinary arc of growth and innovation that defines our community,” said Dean Maciek Nowak, Ph.D. “What makes a Tobin education unique is the way we blend mission-driven values with real-world learning and future-focused curriculum.”

Today, the Peter J. Tobin College of Business stands at the intersection of legacy and possibility. Rooted in nearly a century of history and inspired by a transformative vision set into motion 25 years ago, the College looks toward its centennial with renewed purpose. The next chapter is already unfolding, shaped by experiential learning, global engagement, and a commitment to preparing leaders who will not only navigate the future of business, but help define it.
