International Student Pursues Biomedical Dreams at St. John’s

Biomedical Sciences major, Juan Pablo Vargas Rodriguez, a native of Trieste, Italy, came to St. John’s University because of its proximity to New York City and a desire to continue an education already steeped in international studies.

Educated at The International School of Trieste, a private, nonprofit English-language institution, Juan Pablo possessed an intense desire to get out of his comfort zone by immersing himself in another culture. He wanted to expand his global perspective.

“After meeting a St. John’s recruiter, I knew I wanted to spend the next four years there,” he explained. “The school’s proximity to a global hub of different cultures factored greatly into my final decision. I wanted to continue my studies in an English speaking country.”

Juan Pablo’s decision was cemented by his acceptance into the Ozanam Scholars Program, which develops students to become social justice advocates and responsible citizens in their local and global communities.

“The program has allowed me to volunteer locally every week and participate in global volunteer missions.”

He added, “Through weekly service and reflection, I’ve learned how to engage with communities different from my own and think more deeply about social issues and the responsibilities we have.”

Juan Pablo is also a Student Ambassador, providing guided tours of the University for prospective students. “It has allowed me the opportunity to take on more responsibilities on campus while making new friends from completely different majors.”

On the academic side, Juan Pablo loves working in the Chemistry lab. “As a biomedical sciences student, I always look forward to getting into the lab and the feeling of not only being a student, but someone who might have a positive impact on the future as a professional.”

Through his lab work, Juan Pablo stressed that he is being prepared both academically and practically. “As I progress further into my major, I become more integrated in the program. This semester, I am taking a class that outlines all the opportunities open to me upon graduation.” In the future, he hopes to attend medical school and specialize in cardiothoracic surgery.

“As an international student, I have had multiple eye-opening experiences, most notably  adapting to a new culture. Meeting so many new people from different backgrounds is one of the best parts about St. John’s. Moving here meant stepping outside my comfort zone in every way—socially, academically, and personally. It has been so rewarding.”
