Joining more than 250,000 fellow marchers, a spirited ensemble of University students, alumni, administrators, staff, and members of the St. John’s Irish Society proudly represented St. John’s before an estimated two million spectators.
Dressed in unmistakable St. John’s red amid a sea of green, the University delegation stood out as they marched up the iconic midtown route. “As a New Yorker with Irish heritage, being part of this parade is a must,” said senior Daniel Sullivan ’26SJC, from Hicksville, NY.
Daniel, a member of the Irish Society at St. John’s who also serves as a member of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Student Advisory Committee, added, “Marching with St. John’s is something every student should experience,” he said. “Seeing and hearing the love from the crowd—it reinforces the power of the St. John’s brand.”
The NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade—first held in 1762, 14 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence—remains the nation’s oldest and largest celebration of Irish heritage and the Catholic faith. The parade continues to draw participants from across the globe, and an estimated two million St. Patrick’s Day spectators braved the cold to paint the Big Apple green for the annual parade.
This year, the NYC parade was dedicated to the birth of our nation, commemorating and celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
As the University marched past Fifth Avenue landmarks, including Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and The Plaza, parade watchers joined the University delegation in cheering, “Let’s go, Johnnies!” and “We are… St. John’s!”
Since 2005, Brian Browne, Associate Vice President of University Communications and Public Affairs, has coordinated the University’s presence in the parade. “It is a fun and special experience,” he said. “St. John’s always gets a great reception from the hometown crowd—and this year, some revelers even started chanting for Red Storm legend, Zuby!”
Zuby Ejiofor is the dynamic, six-foot-nine senior forward for the Red Storm and the first player in BIG EAST Conference history to win BIG EAST Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the Dave Gavitt Trophy for the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
The day began with a morning alumni brunch at Stout Grand Central, which brought together graduates across generations, many of whom make the parade an annual tradition. Martin P. Whelan ’84CBA, President/Owner, Stout NYC Hospitality Group, and member of the Board of Governors, greeted attendees, wishing them well and toasting all things St. John’s.
In a city bursting with St. Patrick’s Day spirit, St. John’s once again brought its own vibrant touch, celebrating heritage, community, and the enduring bond between New York and the University.
