St. John’s University today announced the launch of St. John’s Ready, a new University initiative that ensures incoming firsttime, firstyear students begin their academic journey fully prepared with required course materials available from the first day of classat no cost to them.

The pilot program St. John’s Ready will debut for students enrolling in Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 terms. The program removes financial barriers to course materials while creating a consistent, reliable learning experience for students and faculty alike. New first-time, first-year students who start at St. John’s in the Fall 2026 or Fall 2027 term will receive their required course materials at no additional charge.

“St. John’s Ready reflects St. John’s commitment to student preparedness, affordability, and academic excellence,” said Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President. “By ensuring that students have what they need from day one, we reinforce a culture where learning can begin immediately and equitably for all.”

The cost of college textbooks have more than doubled in the last two decades according to the Consumer Price Index, and the average student budget for books and supplies at a four-year public institution is $1,290 according to the College Board, suggesting that about half of students will spend more (sometimes significantly more) than that growing amount.

A Simplified, StudentCentered Approach

Under the St. John’s Ready program, all new firsttime, firstyear students who enroll in the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 terms at St. Johns are automatically enrolled in St. Johns Ready. Required course materialsselected by facultyare identified, coordinated, and delivered before the semester begins through a streamlined process managed in partnership with the Universitys Campus Store.

Textbooks in bookstore

Students receive their materials in the format required for their courses, whether digital or physical. Digital materials such as textbooks, courseware, and access codes are delivered directly through Canvas, allowing students to use features like searching, highlighting, and notetaking. Physical materials, including printed textbooks or lab manuals when required, are prepared for instore pickup and may be kept at the end of the term. Recommended or optional materials are not included but may be purchased separately through the campus store.

This coordinated system ensures that students arrive on the first day of class ready to engage with coursework, rather than having to navigate multiple platforms or search for materials independently.

Removing Cost Barriers

Textbooks and course materials are a significant expense for many college students. Through St. John’s Ready, all required course materials are included at no additional cost for eligible students.

By eliminating surprise costs, the program allows families to budget with confidence while reaffirming St. John’s mission to increase access and affordability in higher education. “This initiative is about more than convenience—it’s about fairness,” said Simon G. Møller, Ph.D., Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Every student deserves an equal starting point. Red Storm Ready ensures that no student falls behind simply because they lacked access to required materials.”

Supporting Faculty and Academic Freedom

St. John’s Ready is designed to support—not restrict—faculty academic freedom. Faculty retains full authority to select the textbooks, editions, formats, and providers that best support their courses, including open educational resources.

The program strengthens instruction by ensuring students receive the correct, instructoradopted materials by the first day of class, enabling faculty to begin teaching immediately without delays caused by access issues.

Faculty are supported through clear adoption timelines, coordinated communication, and assistance in integrating digital materials into Canvas, fostering smoother teaching and learning experiences.

A Commitment to Readiness and Coordination

St. John’s Ready reflects St. John’s strategic priorities focused on readiness, clarity, and coordination across academic and operational teams. By aligning faculty adoptions, campus leadership, and the Campus Store into one unified process, the University reduces complexity while enhancing the student experience.

If students add or drop courses, access to materials automatically updates, and digital content is adjusted accordingly. Communications regarding access, pickup notifications, and timelines are delivered directly to students’ official University email addresses, ensuring consistent and timely information.

Looking Ahead

St. John’s Ready represents a meaningful investment in student success at St. John’s—one that underscores the institution’s longstanding commitment to educating the whole person and fostering academic excellence from the very first day. The University is working with the Campus Store partner, Follett, who will manage all course material fulfillment.

“As we welcome the next generation of Johnnies, St. John’s Ready sends a clear message,” said Scott Lemperle ’20 M.B.A., Executive Director, Conference and Auxiliary Services. “At St. John’s, we meet students where they are, remove barriers to learning, and ensure they are fully prepared to thrive.”
