A team of undergraduate students from St. John’s University’s Peter J. Tobin College of Business, Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science earned second place nationally in the 2025 National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) National Talent Development Competition, held virtually October 15–21, 2025.
Representing St. John’s were Shaunte Boxill, Christopher St. Louis, Max Mason, and Precious Onuoha, who competed against teams from top universities across the country. The students, paired with an Insurance Employer Partner (Amerisure), were tasked with developing a strategic case study business plan for launching insurance solutions for the creator economy, and presenting their business recommendations to a panel of NAAIA Industry judges, addressing real-world challenges faced by insurers and innovators in a rapidly changing market.
The NAAIA Talent Development Competition—now in its ninth year—aims to promote careers in insurance and risk management within the Black and African American community, giving students access to corporate Insurance partner(s) and industry leaders. Teams are judged on their analytical insight, creativity, professionalism, and their ability to deliver an effective, compelling business presentation, outlining actionable business recommendations and solutions.
“Our students demonstrated exceptional analytical thinking, collaborative teamwork, and professionalism,” said Basil Thompson, Professor and the St John’s NAAIA Team Coach at Tobin’s Greenberg School of Risk Management. “Their performance reflects the caliber of talent Tobin develops—students who can translate theory into practical, high-impact solutions for industry.”
St. John’s participation in this competition underscores Tobin’s commitment to experiential learning and purposeful leadership, providing students with real-world opportunities to apply classroom knowledge, engage with industry professionals, and contribute to the future of risk management and insurance.
