Remembering Hon. Guy J. Mangano ’55, ‘83HON

Dean Jelani Jefferson Exum and the entire St. John’s Law community mourn the passing of esteemed alumnus Hon. Guy J. Mangano, who served the people of New York as a longtime public servant and as he advanced the field of dispute resolution.

After graduating from St. John’s Law, Justice Mangano worked on behalf of his fellow New Yorkers as an investigator and assistant counsel for the Joint Legislative Committee, on the New York State Assembly for Kings County, and on the State Senate for Kings County. Continuing his public service in the state’s judiciary, he presided in the New York City Family Court, in the Supreme Court for the Second Judicial District, and as Administrative Judge of the Criminal Term of the Kings County Supreme Court. He then adjudicated appeals in the Appellate Term for the Second and Eleventh Judicial Districts and in the Appellate Division, Second Department, where he was elevated to Presiding Justice.

After he retired from the bench, Justice Mangano joined the New York office of JAMS Arbitration, Mediation and ADR Services. With a strong belief in mediation and arbitration as powerful tools for resolving conflict, he supported the work of the Law School’s Hugh L. Carey Center for Dispute Resolution by establishing the Mangano Dispute Resolution Advancement Award. Presented annually, the award recognized scholars whose published empirical research furthered the advancement and understanding of the values and skills of dispute resolution. 

Justice Mangano also gave back to St. John’s Law and its students as an adjunct professor. Outside the classroom, for years alumni and friends celebrated and amplified his generous support of alma mater at the Mangano Golf Outing. “Just as Justice Mangano’s deep commitment to public service continues to resonate for New Yorkers, his dedication to St. John’s Law leaves a lasting legacy for our students, alumni, and wider Law School community” Dean Jefferson Exum says. “We send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.”
