After a 2024 first-place finish, St. John’s University’s Tobin College of Business was the school to beat as eight Johnnies competed in the 10th annual Business Analytics Competition at Manhattan University from May 19-21. One of the two Tobin teams moved to the final round before an impressive panel of industry judges awarded Tobin's students third place in the prestigious competition.

Team One, which advanced to the finals, was composed of senior Brianna Garrison and juniors Jeondo Lee, Joella Paccione, and Alina Malakhova. Team Two featured Salisha Abdool, Rebecca Ramkirath, Ritali Espada and Emily Valle. Both teams were mentored by Assistant Professor of the Practice Michael D. Herley, who was recently honored as “Teacher of the Year” at the Tobin College of Business. Seven of the eight students are business analytics majors, with one specializing in finance.

This marks the second consecutive year a Tobin team has excelled at this competition, with last year's achievements including a first-place finish and Best Poster award. St. John’s University is proud to be the only institution to consistently place in the top three over the past two years.

“This group demonstrated exceptional analytical skills, teamwork, and determination throughout the competition,” commented Herley, “Facing a challenging panel data set, they impressed industry judges and peers with their innovative analysis and compelling presentations.”

Paul F. Thompson, a judge and vice president at DXC Technology commented, “St. Johns brought two outstanding teams to the competition this year. These two teams and the caliber of the total field of teams makes being one of the judges extremely challenging. Your teams are a real credit to St. Johns and to (Mike Herley’s) leadership. Hopefully, we'll see the Red Storm analytics crew next year.”

Professor Herley is already predicting that this high-caliber era will continue. “We will use these results as fertilizer to grow even stronger and come back better next year! We couldn't be prouder of our students and their outstanding accomplishment!”
