New York - On April 1, Dr. Aleksandr Gevorkyan led a group of thirteen St. John's University student to visit the NY editorial office of Financial Times (FT). Student were able to meet with the paper’s leading journalists and staff. The conversation was led by Robert Armstrong, FT’s US financial commentator and former US Financial editor, followed by a meeting with Kirsty Devine, FT’s Head of U.S. HR, and Rebecca Garfinkel, FT’s Customer Success Specialists Lead. St. John's University has a Financial Times subscription service available for students to complement their in-class learning.
"In addition to the educational aspect, these visits turn into an interesting and unexpected career path for some," shared Dr. Gevorkyan, Ph.D., Henry George Chair in Economics. "Many of these professional journalists come from a variety of educational backgrounds - and an economics degree certainly prepares our students to ask the important questions."
"It was truly inspiring hearing about Robert Armstrong's experience writing non-partisan pieces in such a partisan time," added Sophia Feeney, a St. John's senior studying international management.
The Economics department is also planning a trip to the United Nations and preparing to host this semester's Henry George lecture on April 14.
