In a continued effort to curb identity theft by helping people safeguard their personal information, St. John’s University, in collaboration with NYS Assemblymember Nily Rozic and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), will host a community shredding event on Thursday, August 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at the University’s Queens, NY, campus.
Assemblymember Rozic emphasized the significance of the event in bolstering community protection against identity theft. “I am thrilled with the shared partnership with St. John’s and DSNY for organizing this impactful shredding event,” she said. “Safeguarding our community's security is paramount, and local events like this help to educate residents about best practices and secure document disposal.”
Residents should enter St. John’s University at Gate 3 located on Utopia Parkway and 80th Road and are invited to drop off up to three “copy box-size” boxes of documents for safe, on-site disposal. The service is provided free of charge, reinforcing the organizers’ dedication to combating identity theft and ensuring the well-being of residents.
“A shredding event is a helpful way to raise community awareness about the importance of secure document disposal, and St. John’s is proud to partner with Assemblymember Rozic to provide a convenient solution,” stated Brian Browne, Associate Vice President of University Communications and Public Affairs.
Throughout the event, participants can securely dispose of confidential documents such as tax forms, insurance papers, and legal documents. There is a limit of three boxes per person, and this is a paper-only event. Metal, plastic, magazines, cardboard, and other materials may damage shredders and will not be accepted. Clothing, X-rays, and batteries and cell phones are not allowed. Metal binder clips must be removed in advance.
