A team of three Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science (GSRM) students placed third in the 2021 National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) Talent Competition. This is the first time that a team from St. John’s University participated in this competition.

This year’s competition required the students to respond to a cyber breach scenario at a fictional insurance company and present recommendations to the insurer’s leadership on how to manage the effects of the breach.

The team, consisting of Kai Cuttino ‘22GSRM, David Foster ‘22GSRM, and Jocelyn McFadden ‘23GSRM, was sponsored by AXIS Capital, a GSRM board company. Since May, the students and their advisor, Associate Professor of Risk Management and Insurance David Pooser, Ph.D., met weekly with a rotating team from AXIS who advised them on cyber losses, cyber insurance, data privacy laws, and best practices. The students obtained valuable, real-world knowledge from AXIS cyber underwriters, claims adjusters, attorneys, HR experts, and others.

“AXIS was extremely impressed by our students’ work ethic and willingness to learn, and I know that they want to continue this partnership (and are especially interested in Kai, David, and Jocelyn),” said Professor Pooser. “AXIS was a terrific partner and was completely committed to the students’ success.”

As a result of their placement in the competition, each student will receive a scholarship from NAAIA.
