On Friday, January 18, a dozen members of the Students for Life here at St. John’s University and I attended the 46th annual March for Life in Washington, DC. The March for Life is an annual rally protesting both the practice and legality of abortion in the U.S. It is held in Washington, D.C. each year on or around the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision issued in 1973 by the United States Supreme Court decriminalizing abortion.
This theme of this year’s march, “Unique from Day One: Pro-life is Pro-science,” focused on how scientific advancements reveal the humanity of the unborn child from the moment of conception. The featured speaker at the rally preceding the march was pro-life advocate Abby Johnson who previously worked at Planned Parenthood as a clinic director, but resigned in October 2009. She states that she resigned after watching an abortion on ultrasound.
The 2019 March for Life also included a bipartisan Congressional list of speakers: Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), and State Rep. Katrina Jackson (D-LA). “We are delighted to have these four pro-life champions speak at the March for Life rally. The right to life is a non-partisan issue and, regardless of politics, we should all unite for life and stand against abortion, the greatest human rights abuse of our time,” said Jeanne Mancini, President of March for Life.
The number of St. John’s University students attending this year’s March for Life was lower this year due to the fact that the march was scheduled during the winter break. We are very grateful for the hospitality of Holy Family Parish here in Jamaica who reserved spaces for our group on their buses. Next year’s March for Life is scheduled for Friday, January 24, 2020, and we hope to once again fill a bus with St. John’s students!
