St. John’s Hosted the Queens Center for Progress 45th Annual Community Walk and 5K Run

May 1, 2018

On Sunday, April 22, 2018, St. John’s University hosted the Queens Centers for Progress (QCP) 45th annual community walk and 5K run.

This year’s Grand Marshall, Joseph Sciame, Vice President for Community Relations at St. John’s, kicked off the event at the QCP’s headquarters on 164th St. & Goethals Ave. More than 350 participants, including fifty runners, stepped off the starting line and looped twice through the St. John’s campus. All the participants ended back at QCP where a banquet-sized brunch awaited them.

NYS Assemblyman David Weprin (District 24) and NYC Council Member Barry Grodenchik (District 23) were also on hand as honorary “5K-er’s”. Both elected officials have been staunch supporters of the Queens Centers for Progress and advocates of people with developmental disabilities and direct care workers. Also joining in the community walk were members of the Queens Chapter of Achilles International whose mission is to train athletes with any challenges to participate in mainstream sports. Athletes are paired with guides to complete the challenging course.

The event raised more than $32,000, and proceeds will go directly to QCP to enhance their programs. Along with host and Flagship Community Sponsor, St. John’s University; other chief corporate sponsors included Aramex, Mutual of America, Ray-Block Xerox, and JFA Insurance.

Queens Centers for Progress mission is to provide services to children and adults in Queens County who have Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities.  The purpose of these services is to maximize the range and quality of independent life choices available to the individuals and their families.
