Epsilon Kappa, SJU Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, Celebrates 53rd Anniversary

May 2, 2017

St. John’s University’s Spanish Honor Society will hold its annual Induction Ceremony on May 3, 2017 at the school’s Queens campus. The event will take place at 5:30 pm in the Undergraduate Admission Welcome Center, formerly known as Council Hall.

The guest poet, Yolanda Blanco, a frequent visitor of the Chapter and an adamant supporter of Women’s Rights, will present her views in an interactive performance of her poetry. During the evening, St. John’s students will take part in an open reading of their own works. Victoria Girardin, the talented President of the Chapter, will delight the public in a series of songs, and members of the Asociación Fanaca-USA will perform the marinera peruana, the graceful national folkloric Peruvian courtship dance.

Dr. Marie-Lise Gazarian, the Moderator of the Chapter and Vice president of Sigma Delta Pi for the Northeast and Director of the Graduate Program in Spanish, will interview Julio Zelaya, former Governor of Peru and alumni of St. John’s MA Program in Spanish, for his recent book.

The following evening on May 4, Epsilon Kappa will host an evening with Rosalía Arteaga, one of the most influential women in Latin America at 5:30 pm.  An educator, writer, politician, lawyer, journalist, and poet, as well as a Member of the Real Academia Europea de Doctores, Ms. Arteaga served as the first female head of state of Ecuador.

Dr. Gazarian, who is known for her televised conversations with Hispanic writers, will have the privilege of interviewing this outstanding woman. The interview will be followed by questions from the audience, which she will moderate.

The event will take place in the Language and Culture Center (GLCC), St. John Hall, Room 104, St. John’s University.
