St. John’s Presents First Annual Dr. Jaya Haldar Memorial Seminar

April 18, 2017

St. John’s University presents its first annual Dr. Jaya Haldar Memorial Seminar on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in D’Angelo Center. The seminar will include guest speaker, Dr. Sankar Ghosh, Ph.D., Silverstein and Hutt Family Professor and Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.  The title of the talk is “Novel Mechanisms for Regulation of Inflammation.”

Dr. Ghosh earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Calcutta University, India; a M.S. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York; and his Ph.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York.  He subsequently did his postdoctoral work at the Whitehead Institute, Cambridge, Massachusetts (MIT), under the supervision of Nobel laureate David Baltimore.

In 2015, the seminar was endowed by Dr. Dipak Haldar in memory of Dr. Jaya Haldar, a retired full time professor at St. John’s University. Dr. Jaya Haldar joined the Department of Biological Sciences at St. John’s University from Columbia University Medical School in 1983. Her research was focused on posterior pituitary hormones oxytocin and vasopressin and on understanding of the role of oxytocin in the spinal cord. The endowment provides an opportunity for students and faculty to meet a high profile scientist and provide a platform for networking and alumni engagement.
