St. John’s University Hosts Discussion in Honor of National Public Health Week

April 3, 2017

St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and the Health Sciences, Masters of Public Health Program will be celebrating National Public Health Week with a seminar titled “Empowering People for Health Communities” on Wednesday, April 5. Every year the American Public Health Association partners with communities across the United States in observance of National Public Health Week, which takes place April 3–9. The discussion aims to bring the fields of education, social justice, and environmental policy into the spotlight.

The keynote speaker, Drew Harris DPM, MPH, Director of the Master of Health Policy and Master of Population Health programs at Thomas Jefferson University, will speak about his work at the vital nexus of population health science and practice, public policy and politics.  He will challenge the audience to see and apply health policymaking in a broader political and social framework.

Eric Rice Ph.D., Director of Urban Schools Initiative and Associate Director of the Urban Health Institute at Johns Hopkins University, will speak about the goal of social justice through education. Ideally, education is supposed to remove barriers and create a level playing field. He will challenge us to think about how this does or does not happen in national and global contexts.

Lastly, Daniela Lewy, MPH EdLD Executive Director of the Virginia Governor’s Children’s Cabinet, will speak about the structural-environmental work the cabinet does, including city planning, transit, housing, and other initiatives designed to empower children and communities.
