St. John’s University Presents “I am Psyched,” a Smithsonian Pop-Up Exhibit Exploring Women of Color in Psychology

In partnership with the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Smithsonian Institution and, in celebration of Women’s History Month, St. John’s University will host a stop on the national tour of “I am Psyched,” March 15 – 16 in D'Angelo Center Living Room from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. A pop-up exhibit that highlights the contribution of women of color in psychology throughout history, the exhibit will explore how being a woman of color has affected their journey and shaped their work in psychology.

On March 17, in conjunction with exhibit, St. John’s will host a seminar titled “Women of Color: Contribution to Psychology” in D'Angelo Center Room 128, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Beverly Greene, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at St. John’s, and Shari Miles-Cohen, Ph.D., Senior Director, Women’s Program Office of the APA, will offer opening remarks. Jessica Henderson Daniel, Ph.D., the first African American woman to be elected president of the APA will deliver the keynote address where she will discuss the special challenges she encountered as a woman of color in psychology and her strategies to overcome these hurdles.

A panel discussion moderated by Dr. Greene includes: Muninder K. Ahluwalia, Ph.D., Assoc. Professor, Montclair St. University; Jean Lau Chin, Ed.D., Professor of Psychology, Adelphi University; Francine Conway, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers; Naa Oyo A. Kwate, Ph.D., Assoc. Professor of Human Ecology and Africana Studies, Rutgers; Michelle Owens-Patterson, Ph.D., Independent Psychologist.
