St. John’s University Leads the Way at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk

October 27, 2016

St. John’s University is enthusiastic about having raised over $15,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2016 campaign. Over 650 students, staff and administrators participated in this year’s Making Strides walk on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, Midland Beach on Staten Island, and in Central Park in Manhattan.

As a Flagship sponsor with an eighteen year track record of participation, St. John’s University walkers, along with the Jazz and Pep Bands, the Cheerleaders and Dance Team added a true Red Storm spirit to the Queens Making Strides event. Joining the 12,000 walkers who came out to raise over $670,000 at one of the New York’s largest walks in Flushing Meadows Park, 530 SJU students all decked out in pink and red proudly represented the Queens Campus and joined the fight to end breast cancer. On the Staten Island Campus, over 120 students made their way to Midland Beach where a sea of pink had descended upon the pleasant fall landscape and joined the 8,000 others as the borough managed to raise $620,000 for the Making Strides campaign.

Led by Paul Lazauskas, Associate Director for Community Relations and Interim Board President for the Queens Advisory Board of American Cancer Society, the Queens campus set in motion numerous events through the month of October to raise breast cancer awareness and familiarity with the Making Strides campaign. Activities included an athletic department “Fun Run” that decorated the campus in pink ribbons and various “Pink Out” games by the Women’s Soccer and Volleyball teams. Administrators in the Tobin College of Business and the College of Professional Studies donated funds during their sponsored “Wear Denim to Work Days”.

In acknowledging the hard work and coordination of all that was done, Joseph Sciame, Vice President for Community Relations commented, “As has been the case in recent years, St. John's University is making a difference in dollars and awareness about the fight against cancer. University life is about education and we walk each year in order to educate and someday help in finding that cure.”
