“I received scholarship support while I was at St. John’s, and that money was donated by alumni and friends,” explained Davy, who majored in Marketing. “At the end of the day, I owe so much to the University and our alumni, so it simply feels right to give back and impact today’s students.”
Davy has put her degree to good use. After spending a few years working in Food Service Marketing, she has recently accepted a position with Indique, an international hair-extension brand with retail stores across the United States and distributors throughout the world. As the daughter of immigrants from the West Indies and South America, Davy views the opportunity as a perfect way to merge two of her passions.
“I literally grew up in my mom’s hair salon in Queens,” she said, “so this is a great opportunity to combine my lifelong interest in beauty and hair with my passion for Marketing. Plus, Indique is a rapidly expanding company, so it’s exciting to be a part of that.”
But Davy points to her extracurricular activities at St. John’s as having instilled in her the leadership qualities that help her excel. She served as Executive Vice President of Haraya, the Pan-African Students’ Coalition, and helped plan the organization’s first Homecoming event, which welcomed back alumni to mix and mingle with current students.
“I recently attended this past year’s homecoming, this time as an alumna,” she said. “I was really proud to see the event was still going on. It’s sort of my legacy there.”
Although she only graduated three years ago, Davy knows the importance of giving back and pays it forward by contributing whatever she can. Her advice to fellow alumni who are unsure of how to contribute? Get involved!
“I haven’t made a big contribution yet – I’m not in a position to do that,” she explained. “But if other young alumni contribute whatever they can, then our dollars will add up to help new students looking for scholarships, and that’s an amazing feeling.”
As she points out, “We were in their shoes just a few years ago. It simply feels right to now help them follow their dreams.”
