Pope Francis: Four Perspectives on His Words, Actions, and Significance

On October 28, St. John’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies convened a groundbreaking panel on Pope Francis and his pontificate entitled, “Pope Francis: Four Perspectives on His Words, Actions and Deeds.”  The evening, organized as a collaboration between graduate students and faculty, featured four professors who drew upon their specific areas of expertise to analyze the words and actions of Pope Francis.

Dr. Meghan Clark addressed how the pope has used language and his physical presence to communicate his stance on solidarity and social justice.  Dr. Marian Maskulak, CPS highlighted how Ignatian spirituality has influenced Pope Francis.  Dr. Jean-Pierre Ruiz discussed the significance of Pope Francis’s South American roots.  Dr. Michael Whalen, C.M. identified connections between Pope Francis and the life and teachings of St. Francis of Assisi.  The program concluded with a lively question and answer period.

With over seventy-five people in attendance, it was clear that this evening of thoughtful scholarship was of great interest to a broad audience.  The department plans to bring together faculty, students, and the university community for similar events that provide theological perspective on issues and developments in church and society.
