Finding Community and Opportunity: Roshni’s Transfer Journey to St. John’s

In this Q&A spotlight, Roshni shares what led her to switch, how she built her community at St. John’s, and the advice she has for other students considering a new path forward.
Sometimes you start your college journey thinking you’ve found the right fit, only to realize later that something’s missing. Maybe the academics don’t challenge you enough, the community doesn’t feel like home, or the opportunities you imagined just aren’t there.
That’s exactly what happened for Roshni Sharma, a senior majoring in business management. She knew she wanted more: a place where she could grow, connect, and prepare for her career. Transferring to St. John’s University gave her all of that and more.
“I used to wonder what life would have been like if I had gone straight to St. John’s after high school. But starting somewhere else first made me appreciate St. John’s even more. Every day I’m grateful to be here, walking across campus and knowing I worked to get here. I’m proud to be a St. John’s student—and even prouder to share my story.”

Q&A with Roshni Sharma: Her Transfer Experience at St. John’s
Why did you decide to transfer from community college to St. John’s?
Truthfully, I went to community college because it was the safer bet. It was cheaper and closer to home. I studied acting there and got my associate’s degree, which I loved. But every part of me knew that I needed to find a place that would push me further than just going to class and going home. I wanted a school that would give me more opportunities academically and professionally.
At my first college, the resources were limited. There wasn’t much of a community, and I didn’t see a lot of representation or people who shared my background or ambitions. I had always wanted to pursue business, and I knew The Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s was a well-established program with a strong reputation.
It felt like the right step to prepare me for the real world.
What stood out to you when you first visited the Queens, NY, campus?
My sister, Tamanna Sharma ’17SJC, ’18MS, a proud St. John’s double alumna, had such a positive experience, so I always knew about it. At first, I didn’t want to copy her path, but everything changed when I took a campus tour.
The moment I walked into the D’Angelo Center and saw the tall glass windows, I felt like this was where I was going to be studying, growing, and succeeding. The campus felt vibrant and alive; almost like its own world, totally different from my old school. That tour was a defining moment for me.
How was your transfer process?
I switched my major from acting to business, so not all of my credits transferred. But my counselors were upfront from the start. They showed me exactly which classes counted, what I needed to take, and what grades I had to earn. That clarity made the process much smoother.
Socially, I was also nervous. As a transfer, you feel like you’re starting over, and I was a little older than most first-years. But it worked out better than I expected, thanks to programs and people who helped me get connected right away.
What helped you feel part of the community?
The University’s Explore and More program made a huge difference. Over the summer, before classes even started, I went on trips—Broadway shows, food tours, and boat cruises—with other incoming students. I had built-in friends and mentors by the time the semester began.
I also leaned into every opportunity on campus. I joined the Chappell Players Theatre Group, which became one of my first communities and where I now serve as Public Relations chair. I joined a sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon, and I connected with the South Asian Student Association through cultural events.
And when I realized there wasn’t a space for students to learn about Hinduism in an authentic way, I founded the Sanatan Society. St. John’s really empowers you to create your own space if you don’t see one—and that’s exactly what I did.
Who has been a mentor for you at St. John’s?
One of the first people I met was Jen Cheng, Assistant Director of Enrollment Management Events, and the one leading the Explore and More program for incoming students. She has always been warm and encouraging. She made me feel welcome right away, and that kind of support has meant a lot.
How has St. John’s supported your career goals so far?
I’ve had the chance to work as a Student Ambassador, be part of the mock trial team, and even showcase my jewelry business at a pop-up event on campus. Each experience has helped me build skills and connections.
My big career goal is to become a Chief Executive Officer. I want to call the shots at a company where sustainability, inclusivity, and equality are core values. I’d also love to use my background in both business and theater to make the arts more accessible. I don’t know exactly how yet, but that’s where my passion is leading me.
What advice would you give to students considering transferring?
Put yourself out there. I was nervous at first, but I quickly learned how quickly this campus could feel like home once I got involved. The opportunities and connections are here—you just have to go after them.
You never know which faculty member will open a door for you, or which student will share a passion that sparks a new club or project. My biggest advice: don’t hold back. The world is your oyster, and St. John’s is filled with ways to help you grow.
