- Professor April Merenda Publishes article on Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry
April Merenda, Assistant Professor and Industry Professional of Hospitality Management forThe Lesley H. and William L. Collins of Professional Studies recently published an article in the June 2023 edition of Tourism Now titled Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry: The Quest for Equilibrium: The Balance between Profitability and Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry
Professor Merenda’s research for this article discusses the need for a balance between profitability and sustainability. It is essential for companies to be sustainable to help avoid waste, but it must be done smartly so that it is also profitable and welcoming for guests. Some examples spoken about are reducing resources such as water, electricity and gas which will be more effective overall. Services such as daily housekeeping are huge energy sinks and hotels are now offering guests the power of choice and encouraging them to be more environmentally friendly.
“As an antidote to the global pandemic, the Hospitality industry is taking the lead in applying sustainability goals by connecting its members through involvement and inspiration to drive change.” said Professor Merenda
The changes are more important than ever, and Professor Merenda encourages hotels to consider these adaptations when developing their sustainability plans. They will save money on energy bills by being smart about how they implement them into their business plan.
