St. John's University makes available accident and sickness insurance to all students through University Health Plans. The current carrier as of school year 2023-2024 is Aetna.
Upon registering at St. John's University, all University housing and dormitory students are automatically enrolled in the University mandatory medical insurance plan. Students not in University Housing are welcome to purchase the plan directly with our servicer University Health Plans at 1-833-251-1134. The Resident Health Insurance charge is billed with other University fees at the time you register. Health insurance coverage is mandatory for students in University Housing.
Upon registering at St. John's University, all F-1 and J-1 visa students are automatically enrolled in the University mandatory medical insurance plan. This per semester charge is billed with other University fees at the time you register. Academic Leave of Absence and Maintaining Matriculations are registrations which must be covered with mandatory health insurance coverage. If an F-1 or J-1 visa student is not in the United States during this term, please contact [email protected] for the proper documentation to file for a waiver. If a student is on Academic Leave of Absence or Maintaining Matriculation for a term, health insurance is charged and due.
Health Insurance coverage is mandatory for International students on an F1 or J1 visa and students must carry the University’s plan. The University plan cannot be waived.

Students are not added to the health insurance roster until your term bill is paid in full or enrollment on a payment plan is finalized. You will receive your insurance card login information email directly from Aetna within 10-14 business days of submission by the University. There are no paper ID cards. The 2023-2024 University Student Residence Health Insurance Waiver form will be available starting June 15, 2023.
Waiving Dorm Health Insurance-If you have your own coverage that is equal to or exceeds the coverage provided by St. John's University and is applicable in New York State, you may opt out by completing the waiver application form on the University Health Plans webpage for St. John's University.
PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD YOUR PERSONAL INSURANCE CARDS TO THE MEDICAT SYSTEM-This system is only for vaccination documentation. Insurance cards uploaded to Medicat cannot be retrieved for waiver.
IMPORTANT-Waivers for insurance coverage NOT provided by a domestic carrier will not be accepted.
A $300 penalty may be charged if a waiver is requested after September 6, 2023. There is no waiver after September 13, 2023. Your account will be assessed full insurance charges after this date and these charges are not refundable.
Residence Fall Plans are for full year coverage. If a residence student cancels housing for the Spring semester, insurance coverage is not cancelled and not pro-rated.
Accident and Sickness Insurance is also available for direct purchase to all full-time and part-time commuter students. This insurance can be purchased by enrolling online directly at universityhealthplans.com. The last day to enroll for the Fall semester is September 6, 2023.

As part of the visa requirements, visa students will be required by the Department of State to maintain adequate health insurance coverage for the full duration of your trip that meets or exceeds the following main requirements below. St. John's University has chosen a carrier that we feel best serves the needs of our international students for New York State.
University Health Insurance is mandatory for all F1 and J1 visa students. F1 and J1 visa students cannot submit waivers online. Please refrain from purchasing an outside travel or health insurance policy or a policy that is not US based as it may not be sufficient to cover you in New York State. You are automatically enrolled in insurance ONLY once your term bill is paid in full or on a payment plan.
