The School of Education Scholarship Opportunities

Eligibility

The following is a list of scholarships and eligibility requirements for undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled, or who will enroll, in The School of Education (SOE) at St. John’s University.

Please note that nearly all SOE scholarships are awarded based on financial need. The School of Education Scholarship Committee, in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Services, makes the determination for the majority of scholarships.  

Sylvia Sherman Endowed Scholarship Fund

This Scholarship Fund shall provide one or more partial annual scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving graduate students on the Queens campus, pursuing a master's degree in childhood education grades 1-6. Eligibility includes those focusing on studying special education or teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Annual awards will be made in accordance with standard University policies and procedures. The recipient(s) of the Scholarships shall be selected by the University's Office of Student Financial Services or its successor in collaboration with the School of Education Scholarship Committee. The criteria used in determining the recipients shall be based upon the following preferences: students seeking a career change and/or students with financial need (as determined by FAFSA or other financial documents). The School of Education Scholarship Committee shall review candidate applications to determine recipients who best meet the above-mentioned criteria. Scholarships are renewable for ideal candidates who reapply annually until the recipient(s) completes the graduate program but are limited to two partial scholarships per individual student in each semester.

Barbara Miskowitz Watson ’69SOE Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2011 by the Estate of Marie Miskowitz in memory of Barbara Miskowitz Watson ’69SOE, daughter of John and Marie. Barbara was a Lieutenant in Kings Point Reserve and was also a Science Teacher at St. Ann’s in Garden City. Barbara’s love of education will live on through the recipients of this scholarship. This fund is to provide one or more annual partial scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving students enrolled in The School of Education.

Carmen Yolanda Grajeles Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2004 by the Estate of Carmen Yolanda Grajeles to provide one or more annual partial scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving students in The School of Education who mentor or tutor minority children.

Carol Fanelli Kwiat Endowed Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2003 by Kenneth B. Kwiat '68MBA in honor of his wife Carol Fanelli Kwiat '63Ed in celebration of their 40th wedding anniversary wedding. This fund is to provide one or more annual partial scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving students in The School of Education at St. John's University.

Dorothea Hayes Davatzes Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2001 and amended in 2007 and 2010 by Nick and Dorothea Davatzes. This fund shall provide partial annual scholarship support to a full-time student in The School of Education. At the time of the award, the student must be a junior or senior and must have declared a major in elementary education. It is the intention of the grantor for the scholarship fund to provide the maximum awards based upon availability of income during the academic aid year. Annual recommendations from The School of Education are reviewed and commented by the Davatzes family.

Dr. Barbara Weldon Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1991 by Frank Weldon, in memory of his wife Barbara, a former adjunct faculty member and Assistant Dean in The School of Education. The scholarship provides partial annual scholarship support  to academically qualified students with financial need enrolled in The School of Education. The recipients after selection, will be notified and encouraged in the letter of award to contribute, whenever possible, the amount of the award to the Weldon Scholarship Fund in order to assist other students, a desire of the late Barbara Weldon.

Dr. Teresa A. Trimarco Expendable Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2019 to provide one or more partial annual scholarships to students in the School of Education on the Staten Island Campus.  The criteria used in determining the recipient(s) shall be based upon financial need, of junior or senior status, and a minimum GPA of 3.2.

Elvira Haray Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2009 to provide one or more partial annual scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving students in The School of Education. The Elvira Haray Memorial Scholarship Fund is a testament to her commitment to, and recognition of, the importance of education in a child’s life and the spirit of generosity, integrity and service to others her life came to embody. Recipients from The School of Education should be residents of New York City, preferably Queens or Long Island, NY, majoring or minoring in science or mathematics. Preference will be given to students a) of minority descent or with an intention to teach minority or economically disadvantaged students and/or b) with a physical or learning disability or with an intention of teaching students with such disabilities.

Fatma Abboud '88GEd., '92GEd Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2006 by Dr. Grace M. Dondero to provide grants of one or more partial scholarships to one or more undergraduate students enrolled in The School of Education on the Staten Island Campus who have demonstrated academic improvement and a commitment to community service while attending St. John’s University.

Gloria Gregory McMillan Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1993 by Richard J. McMillan, in memory of his wife Gloria Gregory McMillan '67CBA, to provide annual partial annual scholarship support to students in The School of Education who are majoring in early or elementary education.

Grace Dondero Endowed Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2006 by Dr. Grace M. Dondero to provide grants of one or more partial scholarships to one or more undergraduate students enrolled in The School of Education on the Staten Island Campus who have demonstrated academic improvement and a commitment to community service while attending St. John’s University.

Jean and John Hazelton Scholarship Fund

This fund was established through the generous support of the Hazelton family’s annual Jean and John Hazelton scholarship fundraiser in honor of Dr. Jean Hazelton, a former professor in The School of Education who taught at St. John’s for many years. The fund shall provide grants of one or more partial scholarships to one or more students at The School of Education or The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies.

Jerrold, Alice and Murray Ross Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established in 2011 by Jerrold Ross, Ph.D., former Dean of The School of Education, in honor of his parents Alice and Murray Ross. This fund shall provide one or more partial annual scholarships to academically qualified graduate students in The School of Education.

Maria T. Fiorelli Endowed Scholarship Fund

The scholarship fund shall provide annual scholarship(s) to academically qualified and/or deserving students participating in the student teacher program in The School of Education. In addition to scholarship(s) support, the scholarship fund shall also provide funding support for student teachers to attend and/or visit Staten Island cultural institutions to enhance their professional development. The recipient(s) of the scholarships shall be selected by The School of Education Dean’s Office in consultation with the University’s Office of Student Financial Services or its successor. The criteria used in determining the recipients are need and/or scholastic achievement. Preference is given to students enrolled on the St. John’s University’s Staten Island, NY, campus.

Maureen A. Hartigan Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1988 by alumna Anne Hartigan Flynn, Grace Hartigan Klinger, and Catherine Hartigan McNicholl in memory of their sister Maureen Hartigan. This fund is to provide partial annual scholarship support to an academically qualified full-time sophomore, junior, or senior with financial need in The School of Education. (This scholarship is not renewable.)

Prof. Shirley A. Griggs Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2003 by Dr. Shirley A. Griggs to provide one or more annual partial scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving students enrolled in the     Master’s Degree and/or Professional Diploma Program in School Counseling (as currently known or the equivalent thereof). Recipient recommendations are made by the Dean of the School of Education and/or the Chairperson of the School of Counseling Department/Program.  The criteria used in determining the recipients shall be based upon need and/or scholastic achievement.

School of Education Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Pacini Family Institute for Early Childhood Education is a travel abroad summer program that utilizes innovative teaching approaches for young and preschool-aged children in Italy, France, and/or other European countries. The expectation is that this institute will become a unique program to St. John’s University and a nationally recognized institute for teaching excellence and innovative teaching and research techniques for early childhood education.

SJU Legends Scholarship

This fund was established in 2014 to provide grants of one or more partial annual scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving undergraduate students in St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, The School of Education, The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies, or The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. Recipient(s) will be a resident of the five boroughs of New York City and/or Nassau/Suffolk Counties. Preference is given to a student(s) who demonstrates high financial need and possesses a minimum 2.8 grade point average.

The Catherine M. Walsh '57UC Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2015 by Kathleen Smorto. It provides one or more partial annual scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in The School of Education. Preference will be given to students who graduated from a Catholic high school in Brooklyn, NY.

The Eugene and Stella Tarantino Endowed Scholarship in the School of Education

This scholarship is a bequest established in 2021 by Marie A. Tarantino ’70Ed to provide one or more partial annual scholarship(s) to academically qualified and deserving undergraduate students in The School of Education. The recipient(s) shall be selected by the Office of Student Services. The criteria used in determining the recipients are financial need, an enrollment status of junior or senior, and a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Preference will be given to students who graduated from a high school in New York City or Westchester County. This scholarship is renewable based on the eligibility of the student to meet the criteria and show academic promise.

The Janet Mangione Service Learning Endowment

This endowed scholarship was established in 2013, in memory of triple alumna, Janet E. Mangione, former Associate Director of Academic Service-Learning (ASL) and avid advocate and supporter of academic service-learning in coursework.  

The Joseph L. Howard '73CBA Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2015 by Jo Ann Howard to provide one or more partial annual scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving undergraduate students enrolled in The School of Education or The Peter J. Tobin College of Business with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

The Madeleine and Joseph Brennan Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Madeleine and Joseph Brennan Endowed Scholarship Fund  was established in 2014 to provide grants of one or more partial scholarships to one or more students at St. John’s University, in The School of Education.  Preference will be given to student(s) on the Staten Island campus.  If no one meets the criteria, it can be given to a Queens campus student(s).

The Mangione Family School of Education Scholarship

This fund was established in 2009 and amended in 2019 to provide grants of one or more partial scholarships to one or more graduate or undergraduate students at St. John’s University who have successfully completed at least one Academic Service-Learning project. The recipient(s) of the scholarship shall be selected by the University’s Office of Student Financial Services or its successor, based upon need and/or academic achievement. This scholarship honors all members of the Mangione family who have attended St. John’s University.

Vincent and Helen K. Radziminski Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1991 by Glenn Radziminski in memory of Vincent and Helen Radziminski to provide partial annual scholarship support to academically qualified undergraduate students with financial need enrolled in The Peter J. Tobin College of Business or The School of Education.

William P. McLoughlin Perpetual Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2001 to provide one or more annual partial scholarships to academically qualified and/or deserving students in The School of Education.
