The 3MT is an exciting annual competition for graduate students to showcase their communication skills and present their research to a general audience. It helps students condense their data and focus on important aspects of their research without much deviation.

Eligibility

  • Doctor of Philosophy students must have passed the comprehensive exams.
  • Master of Sciences students must be at least in the 2nd year and must have started their research work under adviser's guidance.

Rules

  • Competitors are limited to a single, static PowerPoint slide. No animations of any kind will be allowed.
  • No sounds or other media files
  • No laboratory equipment or models
  • Students will be judged by eminent scientists in academia and industry
  • Deadline to register as a presenter is April 5, 2024

Judging Criteria

Comprehension and Content

  • Understand the background and significance to the research question being addressed.
  • Explain terminology and avoid jargon.
  • Be clear in describing the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes.
  • Your presentation must have a clear and logical sequence.
  • Adequate time must be spent on each element of the presentation. Are you covering your points too quickly? Are you stretching a particular topic?

Engagement and Communication

  • Competitors must demonstrate elegant oratory skills.
  • Hold the audience's attention.
  • Sufficient stage presence, eye contact, and vocal range must be exhibited. Maintain a steady pace and have a confident stance.
  • Express enthusiasm for your work.
  • Avoid trivialization and generalization.
  • Your PowerPoint slide must be clear, legible, and concise.
