Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Interdisciplinary Business/Juris Doctor (J.D.)

The B.S. in Business requires a minimum of 90 undergraduate credits at Tobin during the first three years of study and 89 credits at the School of Law in years four through six. Courses, which represent 30 credits, taken during the first-year curriculum of the School of Law count towards both the B.S. and J.D. degrees. Conferral of the bachelor’s degree occurs upon completion of the first year of law school, which requires a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Conferral of the Juris Doctor degree occurs upon the completion of the law school curriculum, which is at the close of the sixth year of academic studies.

This Pathway program provides students the opportunity to advance to a J.D. progressing from the B.S. in Business. Students selecting Pathways to advanced degrees require a separate application and must meet admission standards for that Pathway program. Students should seek early program guidance in anticipation of applying to a Pathway Program.

Pre-Application

Incoming freshmen should inform academic advisors of interest or intent to pursue the B.S./J.D. pathway program.  Sophomores should continually discuss programming with their academic advisors to ascertain proper course scheduling in the Tobin College of Business and subsequent scheduling and programming to in the Law School.  First semester sophomores should also seek guidance from Professor Biagio Pilato ([email protected]), the Tobin pre-law advisor.

Application

Students who participate in this program apply to law school one year before a traditional applicant hoping to enter law school, who typically applies during their senior year following completion of a baccalaureate degree. Students applying to the B.S./J.D. Pathways program are encouraged to take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) before the start of their junior year or during the fall of their junior year. Applicants must submit a complete JD application. Applicants are considered for a merit scholarship to the Law School at the time of admission based primarily on LSAT score and undergraduate GPA. The current competitive scores for admission can be found on the entering class fact sheet.  Applicants may also apply through the Special Admission Red Storm Scholars Program without an LSAT score and receive a half-tuition scholarship to the Law School, if they qualify, detailed below.

Special Admission Program and Scholarship Opportunities

Red Storm Scholars

St. John’s University Undergraduate Students may apply to St. John’s Law without taking the LSAT provided they meet the following requirements:

• Must be a current St. John’s University undergraduate student.
• Must have SAT or ACT score greater than or equal to the 85th percentile in one test administration.
• Must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 at the end of the 6th semester as reported on the LSAC Credential Assembly Service report.
• Must NOT take the LSAT at any time. Applicants entering through the Red Storm Scholar Special Admission Program who take the LSAT will have their admission offer reconsidered with their LSAT score. Using the LSAT score for scholarship purposes could alter a scholarship award otherwise received under the Red Storm Scholarship Program.

Students admitted to the Law School as a Red Storm Scholar receive a half-tuition scholarship. Red Storm Scholar applicants must have already taken the SAT or ACT as part of their college application to use it to apply through the pathway program. SAT and ACT scores do not expire for pathway program purposes.

If an undergraduate student does not have an SAT or ACT score, the student is not eligible for the Red Storm Program, and the student should take the LSAT or GRE. A competitive score on the LSAT is required to demonstrate a commitment to the law and the maturity to complete an accelerated program. The LSAT or GRE score then becomes the basis for any scholarship awards. Successful completion of the qualification above does not guarantee admission to the School of Law.
