Before the Spring semester begins, here is an opportunity to learn more about the technology available at St. John’s to engage students and faculty.

9 – 9:30 a.m. 
Opening Remarks

Applications/Tools in Blackboard

This opening session will showcase five different tools available to use with St. John’s Learning Management System, Blackboard. The tools discussed in this presentation will help faculty members create assignments, administer tests, find publisher tools and more. This will be a great introduction for both new and returning faculty looking to get the most out of Blackboard.

9:30 – 10 a.m. 
Classroom Applications

How do you make use of the technology which is available in the classrooms? Would you like to combine desktop control with screen casting and an interactive whiteboard? How can students share their presentations from their desks? Do you have a small delicate artifact that you want students to get a close look at without touching? How do you temporarily hide your presentation from the students in the classroom? Is there a non-linear alternative to PowerPoint? Is there a classroom response system which does not use clickers and is integrated with Blackboard? All these questions will be answered as we explore classroom applications.

Evaluating Online Tools for Course Inclusion: An Interactive Checklist for Faculty

This interactive session, will demonstrate an alpha version of a simple interactive online-tool checklist that can be used to help faculty evaluate the usefulness and efficacy of online tools before incorporating them into their teaching. The checklist contains a series of questions for faculty to consider before implementing the tool into their coursework, with six categories of criteria: alignment with learning goals and objectives; accessibility; ease of use; technical support; privacy and security; and overall tool assessment. This tool was developed in-house, and is currently in testing stages.

10:45 – 11:15 a.m. 
Video in the Classroom

This session will discuss the two-primary video softwares offered at
St. John’s, Panopto and WebEx. Panopto is a video recording solution that can be used for recording, streaming, and sharing with others. Integrated directly with Blackboard, Panopto is a powerful tool that can be utilized within and outside the classroom. WebEx is St. John’s premier video conferencing tool that can host meetings and also record meetings to share with others that could not attend. WebEx can be taken on the go for easy access and reliable connectivity.

11:15 – 11:45 a.m.
Faculty Support

This informative session, will give an introduction to different software applications that are currently offered at St. John’s to help faculty communicate with their students. The session will shed light on how faculty can receive help from Academic Technology with any software related questions. Finally, the session will then conclude with how faculty can make an appointment with Academic Technology for assistance and various software trainings.
