The Story Starts with Us: Shining Light on the First-Generation Experience at St. John’s

First-Gen Students at St. John's University

Ulises Garcia Jr., Assistant Director of First-Year Mentoring Programs at St. John’s University, celebrates the stories, strengths, and potential of first-generation students.

What Does it Mean to be a First-Generation Student?

A first-generation college student is typically someone who is the first in their immediate family to attend college and/or whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year degree in the United States. Beyond the definition, being first-generation carries a deeper meaning: the honor of building on their parents’ or guardians’ stories and the pride of taking those stories farther than they have gone before.

That shared sense of resilience and pride comes to life through stories like Miguel Garcia. A first-generation St. John’s University student, he has turned challenges into motivation and found his place in a supportive community.

“If I had to choose one word to describe my experience as a first-gen scholar and professional, I would choose humility,” shared Mr. Garcia. “It is because of my parents’ sacrifices that I am where I am today. As I continue to learn, grow, and experience the world, I am reminded of where I started—the first pages of my story and the people who gave me a pen, paper, and the words to share it. What a gift to be able to do the same for others.”

Your First-Generation Community at St. John’s

At St. John’s, you’re joining a powerful network of first-generation students, faculty, alumni, administrators, and staff. “You may be the first in your family to pursue higher education in the United States, but we cannot stress enough that you do not have to do this alone,” said Mr. Garcia.

“The first-gen community is growing! We are here to champion your lessons and successes throughout your collegiate journey.”

How to Get Connected

There are several ways to connect with St. John’s first-generation community, build relationships, and find support throughout your college journey.

Celebrate First-Gen Week: November 2–7.

The theme for First-Gen Week 2026 is “The Story Starts With Us: Write It, Direct It, Live It!” The determination and accomplishments of current first-generation students are at the forefront. There is no single way to be first-gen, and the University is committed to highlighting the different paths that brought students here.

Join the First-Gen Fellowship Program.

This fellowship brings together first-gen students, staff, faculty, and administrators each month for community building, professional development, and holistic wellness. This year’s program uses a variety of media, including TV shows, movies, and social media clips, to reflect on the stories that have shaped us and empower participants to share their own.

Connect Through a Peer Mentoring Program.

St. John’s offers two peer mentoring programs that help students build connections, find guidance, and navigate their college experience.

E.P.I.C. (Establish Relationships, Promote Possibilities, Impact Direction, Confirm Next Steps)

This year, E.P.I.C. is operating under a new FLEX mentoring model. Instead of being assigned a traditional mentor, students can connect with and message multiple mentors whenever they need guidance, advice, or support. Through messaging, video calls, and guided conversations, students can access meaningful mentorship from their phones or laptops, anytime and anywhere.

R.I.S.E. (Reach, Inspire, Succeed, Empower)

The R.I.S.E. Network offers a hands-on, in-person mentoring experience rooted in community and leadership. Through group gatherings, one-on-one mentorship, workshops, and social events, students can build supportive relationships and develop the skills and confidence to thrive academically and personally.

Honoring Our History, Promising Our Future

St. John's University was founded to provide educational opportunities for the children of immigrants, reflecting a legacy of access, perseverance, and the pursuit of opportunity. Guided by the Vincentian question, “What must be done?” The Office of First-Year Mentoring at St. John’s University is committed to empowering first-generation students every step of the way.

Through the “I Know and I Promise”, the University demonstrates its commitment to first-generation students and promises to honor the spirit of community and resilience.

A Final Word of Encouragement

Whether you’re just beginning your St. John’s journey or continuing to write your next chapter, you carry with you the people, experiences, and lessons that have shaped your story.

“You are a mosaic of everyone who’s ever loved, cared for, and poured into you,” Mr. Garcia reminds students. “It is our greatest honor to become part of that mosaic—to support your growth academically, socially, and personally, and to celebrate the story you are continuing to write.”
