Graduate Application Requirements

For International Students

For International Graduate Students

  • Official university and post-secondary transcripts, plus degree conferrals/diplomas
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency by submitting score reports for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo, if applicable.
  • For expedited foreign transcript evaluation service at a discounted rate you may complete a SpanTran Foreign Transcript Evaluation Application Form

Official Documents

  • All documents received by the university become the property of the university and cannot be returned to the student
  • If you have only one copy of your official document and are able to visit our Welcome Center in person, we will be happy to make a copy of the original and return the official copy to you immediately.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not attended a postsecondary institution in which English is the language of instruction must provide TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores for admission.

  • Applicants who have taken the SAT can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived
  • Applicants who have attended an American high school abroad or an American university can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived
  • Applicants from the following countries do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score: American Samoa; Antigua and Barbuda; Australia; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Bermuda; Botswana; British Virgin Islands; Canada (except Quebec); Dominica; Eswatini; Gambia; Ghana; Grenada; Grand Cayman; Guyana; Ireland; Jamaica; Kenya; Lesotho; Liberia; Malawi; Mauritius; New Zealand; Nigeria; Papua New Guinea; Sierra Leone; Singapore; South Africa; St. Kitts and Nevis (St. Christopher); St. Lucia; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; Turks and Caicos Isle; Uganda; United Kingdom; U.S. Pacific Trust; Zambia; and Zimbabwe. This list is subject to change. The Office of Admission reserves the right to require additional documentation and waive certain requirements as part of the admission process.

For All International Applicants

All students who have attended an international university or whose academic records are in a language other than English, and not accredited by the United States, must submit a foreign credential evaluation. Please refer to www.naces.org for a listing of credential evaluating agencies from which we can accept course by course evaluations. The evaluations must contain US grade and credit equivalents.

* The CEEB code for the St. John's University Queens and Manhattan campuses is 2799. For the Staten Island campus, the CEEB code is 2845.

 

Additional Information

International students who apply to St. John's are not required to take the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT).

However, international applicants who do take the SAT (and other standardized tests) should have their official score reports sent to St. John's directly from the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB).

Most U.S. embassies and U.S. Information Services (USIS) offices can provide testing dates and locations. For information, write to the College Entrance Examination Board, Box 592-R, Princeton, New Jersey, 08541 USA.
