Graduate Application Checklist

Make sure you have everything ready and on time with our Application Checklist for St. John’s University.

With a “Rolling Admission” policy, we process and notify prospective students as the applications are received. Choose your application type below for a checklist that will help you “check it off” your to-do list.

Application:

  • Complete and submit the online application.
  • The Peter. J. Tobin College of Business checklist
  • The School of Education checklist
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • Two letter(s) of recommendation from instructors in the proposed area of specialization or other qualified individuals as designated by the school, division, or program to which the candidate is applying. The number of recommendations may differ by program.
  • Personal statement describing your reason for pursuing graduate study and leadership objectives in 300 to 350 words. Your statement of goals should briefly, but meaningfully, introduce yourself and describe what you hope to achieve by earning a graduate degree at St. John's. For example, applicants may address such topics as why they chose St. John's, what professional steps they plan to take after earning their degree, and the way that they can contribute to the graduate community if accepted.
  • Three letters of recommendation from the following programs:
    • Audiology, Speech Pathology, Ph.D. Biology, M.A. English, Ph.D. English (2 must be academic), Ph.D. History, M.S. School Psychology, M.S. Pharmacy Administration, Ph.D. Pharmaceutical Sciences, M.PH. Public Health, Ph.D. Clinical Psychology and Psy.D. School Psychology
  • Lab and term paper for the following programs:
    • M.S. School Psychology, Psy.D. School Psychology, Ph.D. Clinical Psychology
  • Lab or term paper
    • M.A. Psychology
  • Writing sample for the following programs:
    • M.A. English, Ph.D. English, Ph.D. History
  • PLEASE NOTE: We do not recommend mailing or faxing documents at this time. We ask that all students upload documents via their Student Online Portal.

Transcripts:

  • Evidence of baccalaureate degree from accredited college or university, including official transcripts from each institution attended.
  • For students with credits earned outside of the United States who submit official college transcripts with English Translation:
    • Transcripts from international universities need to be accompanied by an evaluation from a NACES (naces.org) accredited evaluation source. The foreign transcript evaluation must include a detailed course-by-course comparison, including the U.S. degree equivalency and U.S. grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
    • For expedited foreign transcript evaluation service at a discounted rate you may complete a SpanTran Foreign Transcript Evaluation Application Form

Test Scores:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Duolingo: International students must earn satisfactory TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo exam scores and supply official scores directly to the Office of Graduate Admission. School official testing code is 2799.
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE): Applicants must earn satisfactory GRE General Exam scores and supply official GRE scores directly from ETS to the Office of Graduate Admission. School official testing code is 2799.

The Following Programs Require the GRE: 

  • Literacy, PhD
  • Pharmacy and Health Sciences Programs, All**

*Non-Psychology majors must take both the General and Subject GRE for the Psychology programs. 

**The Physician Assistant MS program does not require the GRE.
