Services
St. John's University makes no distinction between our online students and those who attend classes on campus. Our online students can access our services through a variety of helpful methods including: Skype, e-mail, telephone, etc.

Course Advisement and Registration

After admittance, you are assigned to an advising dean, who guides you through course registration. Your advisor offers you assistance with choosing and registering for your online courses as you proceed through your degree program. You must confirm your course choices with your advisor every semester prior to registration. For details on how to register, please view Registrar’s Web Registration Instruction Worksheet.

MYSJU SUPPORT

The MySJU Support Hotline is available for issue with login into MySJU, University Information System, Blackboard and Student E-mail ([email protected]). You can call the Information Technology office at 718-990-5000. Hours of operation: Monday–Thursday 8 a.m.–4:30p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

Student tech guide

Students can make an appointment online requesting training on how to use MySJU and Blackboard via TimeTrade. This can be accessed via MySJU in the “How do I?” tab.

Your computer and Internet connection are two very important components of a rewarding online learning experience. Please review the information below to make certain that you possess the necessary components to engage successfully in your online courses at St. John’s University.

System Requirements

Generally, your computer requirements will follow the requirements of the operating system (OS) that you are using. Any system older than 4 years may not have the processing power to work with our online learning applications.

Operating Systems

  • Mac – OS 10.8, 10.9, 10.10, 10.11
  • Chrome OS

(Linux is not supported.)

Media Players

  • PC- Windows Media Player (through version 12)
  • Mac – Silverlight 3 or higher

Internet Connectivity

The minimum Internet connection speed to access applications should be a consistent 1.5 Mbps or higher.

Supported Browsers

Our Blackboard learning management system supports the following primary browsers:

  • Apple Safari 6+ (MacOS only)
  • Edge 20+
  • Google Chrome 36+
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 11+ (Windows only)
  • Mozilla Firefox 31+

Some configuration options for Internet Explorer might make some features of Blackboard Learn difficult to use.

Don't See Your Browser or Version Listed?

Both newer and older browsers from these vendors may be supported. If you experience any difficulty with an older version, then it is recommended to upgrade to any of the versions listed.

Java and Other Browser Plugins

A handful of features in Blackboard Learn require particular additional software to be installed. Without these, the features themselves do not function. The following plugins are required:

  • Runtime Environment (JRE) from Oracle enabled as a browser plugin. JRE versions 7 and 8 are recommended. JRE version 6 may work, but could result in unexpected behavior.
  • Flash Player browser plugin from Adobe. Adobe Flash Player 20 or higher is recommended.
  • On Apple Mac OS X, Google's Chrome browser does not support Java 7 because of incompatibilities between 64-bit Java and 32-bit Chrome. Firefox and Safari browsers do not have this limitation on Mac OS X.

How does Online Learning Work?

Students will participate in their online courses using a learning management system called Blackboard, which serves as the “virtual classroom.” Professors will post the course syllabi, assignments, lectures, and announcements in Blackboard and students are usually expected to participate in online discussion boards several times per week based on readings and lecture topics. Some professors will present their lectures in a written format, while others might use audio or video recordings. Communication with professors and classmates occurs usually through Blackboard discussion boards or email, though students can arrange for phone and in some cases remote online sessions. Assignment, quizzes and tests are completed online.

Are online courses easier than on-campus ones?

This is a common misconception. Online courses are comparable to on-campus courses in terms of course content but often require more self-direction on the part of the student. This means that time management skills are very important and that the student might spend more time reading, writing and researching than he/she would for a traditional on-campus course that meets in person for several hours per week.

Do I ever have to come to campus?

As an online student you will not be required to come to campus, however, you are always welcomed to visit! Be sure to have your Storm Card (student ID) ready.

Does a student have to log in to class at a specific time?

Usually not. Courses are asynchronous, which means that students can log in at a time that is convenient for them as long as they meet the course requirements and participate in discussions as noted by the professor. Professors might try to arrange a synchronous virtual class meeting or student conference, however, they are mindful of your time and need for flexibility in arranging these and will work with you.

Am I eligible for a laptop as an online student?

Yes, if you enroll as a full-time student in the graduate Library Science program. There is a fee associated with laptop per semester of usage. Learn more about student laptops.

Do I have access to the same services as on campus students?

Yes! Online students have access to our library databases, writing assistance, academic advisement service and career services.

How much does it cost?

Tuition and fees for online courses are the same as tuition for on-campus courses.

Are online students eligible for scholarships and financial aid?

Yes! Online students are eligible for many of the same scholarships as on-campus students and are eligible to apply for federal aid. You can see an extensive list of St. John’s University offered scholarships for, graduate students. We also encourage students to apply for external scholarships.

Are online programs comparable in quality to on-campus programs?

Yes. The same faculty that teaches on-campus courses teaches online courses. We prepare our highly qualified staff to teach online to ensure that the rigor, quality, and workload for the online classes are comparable to the on-campus classes.

Are your programs accredited?

Yes, our online degree programs are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and registered with the New York State Education Department. Different programs will also have additional accreditation depending on the academic specialty.
