Hey, Johnnies—have you heard the news? The St. John’s digital team is on a mission to find the best go-to spots for you and your friends In and around Queens. Whether you’re in the mood for food, culture, or sporting events, we bring you the coolest, newest, and most exciting places around the borough. Plus, we may be able to hook you up with a discount. Watch and see!
In this episode of In and around Queens, we switch it up and head to the tennis courts at the United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (USTANTC), home of the US Open. How awesome is it that one of the top sports and entertainment events in the world is hosted just a few miles away from our Queens campus in Corona Park?
We had the privilege to meet Daniel Zausner, the center’s Chief Operating Officer, who shared some insight for those Johnnies looking to jump-start their careers in sports. We also got an inside look into where some of the most talented athletes to date have made history.
Winter is almost here, but you can still grab your racquet and throw down like Serena Williams or Naomi Osaka on one of 12 indoor courts. Take a look and see why this venue needs to be on your bucket list. Plus, we’ll let you in on a little secret: The first week of the US Open is free. See you there!

As part of our next In and around Queens segment, we spent the day with Bruce Becker, owner of Max & Mina’s ice cream shop in Flushing, Queens. Bruce takes pride in his business and is always willing to try just about anything new. Most importantly, he wants all of his customers to be happy. The minute you step foot into Max & Mina’s, you feel a sense of nostalgia—collectibles and memorabilia from Bruce’s life decorate the room. It is truly one of a kind!
Whether you’re looking for something to do with your friends after class or yearning to satisfy your sweet tooth, Bruce has you covered. Max & Mina’s is the place to be and there’s something in the shop for everyone. He can’t wait to meet our Johnnies!

Need a great meal after watching our Johnnies play a game, or maybe you need to refuel after a long study session? With delicious pizzas, hearty plates of pasta, and delectable desserts, there’s no better (or closer) place to grab a delicious bite. Don’t forget to order their Red Storm pizza—made strictly with you in mind—or their famous tiramisu before it sells out for the night!
