Message of Solidarity with the People of Ukraine

Our global St. John’s University family watches in horror as the geopolitical conflict in Ukraine escalates. To our students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Ukrainian descent, I extend our sincere hope and prayers for a swift and peaceful resolution to the violence that threatens their homeland and our international community.

At St. John’s, we stand in resolute solidarity with all people of good will worldwide in condemning the Russian invasion of a sovereign nation. This unjust and unprovoked war is an international abomination and must be stopped. The prayers of our entire University community are with all victims of this violent conflict.

This Wednesday, March 2nd, is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the holy season of Lent, and a day of fast and abstinence. I echo the sentiment of our Holy Father Pope Francis asking that we distinctly pray on this day for peace in Ukraine. Visit Lent 2022 for a schedule of Ash Wednesday services and Lenten campus programs. I invite you all to join me in praying for the people of Ukraine, especially on Ash Wednesday and throughout the season of Lent.

Almsgiving is a traditional Lenten practice. I have been assured that it is a charity of the highest caliber, and its website regularly provides timely updates on the developing situation. To University community members in need or struggling with grief or loss during this conflict, I encourage you to consult campus counseling and support services.

Together, as we embark on a journey of repentance and renewal, may we always be mindful of the pain and sacrifice of others. As we prepare the way that leads to Holy Week—in which we celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ—let us pray for a rejection of war and honest and respectful dialogue among peace-loving nations as the only path forward, now, and always.
