Job Summary:
Multiple departments within the School of Education at St. John’s University seek applicants for adjunct faculty positions to begin the Spring 2024 semester and beyond. The needs of the departments will determine the courses. The usual needs for each department are noted below.
Administrative and Instructional Leadership
Seeking candidates with experience as school building and district leaders or higher education leadership experience. Ability to teach leadership preparation courses or doctoral courses in theory, technology, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
Counselor Education
Seeking candidates with a strong Counselor Identity, preferably graduates of Counselor Education programs, who could teach in any of the eight CACREP core areas, or within the school counseling or clinical mental health counseling specialization courses. A preferred qualification is a Doctoral Degree from a CACREP-accredited Counselor Education program or related field.
Curriculum and Instruction
Seeking candidates to teach foundations of education, special education, human learning and development, methodology for various disciplines, instructional technology, human relations and multiculturalism, classroom management, art and music in inclusive settings, and assessment.
Education Specialties
Seeking candidates with terminal degrees, preparation, teaching experience, and certification in one or more of the following areas: Special Education, PK-12. TESOL (ENL), PK-12, Literacy, PK-12, Literacy Online Doctoral level. Knowledge and skill in online CANVAS preferred.
Essential Functions:
The primary responsibility for this position is teaching undergraduate and/or graduate students pursuing degrees leading to state certification. Classes are in person (at the address: 8000 Utopia Parkway, Queens, NY 11439) and online, both synchronously and asynchronously. For asynchronous classes, a certificate is required.
Qualifications:
Required Education: Candidates must have a master’s or doctoral degree within the field of the applicable department.
Required Teaching Experience: Candidates should have at least three years of classroom teaching or professional counseling experience, with a preference for candidates fully certified in their area of expertise.
Required Skills and Characteristics: Public speaking and teaching; technology skills to include administrative functions (e.g. email, Microsoft Office products, videoconferencing software) and teaching functions (e.g. learning management systems, interactive teaching technologies); collaborative spirit; commitment to The School of Education Anti-Racist Statement and Plan.

The School of Education
The School of Education offers doctoral degree (i.e., Ed.D. and Ph.D.) programs and 43 master’s degree programs that accommodate career changers, field changers, and those who seek expertise and/or certification in the areas of Adolescent Education, Childhood Education, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Literacy, School Building Leadership, School Counseling, Special Education, and TESOL. Our programs are designed to be flexible, with online and traditional schedules.
Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership
The Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership offers master’s and advanced certificates in school building/district leadership and educational doctorates in instructional leadership and administration and supervision. The master’s and advanced certificates are offered online, while the Ed.D. programs are delivered with hybrid and online course options. All synchronous courses are offered in the evening after 5 PM.
Department of Counselor Education
The Department of Counselor Education offers master’s degrees and advanced certificates in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The advanced certificate in school counseling is offered online, and all other programs are offered on the Queens campus with online course options. All programs are offered in the evenings after 5 PM.
Department of Curriculum and Instruction
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in childhood and adolescent education and a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction. The department also offers middle school extension advanced certificates. Courses are offered on the Queens campus and online during the day and evening.
Department of Education Specialties
The Department of Education Specialties offers in-person, hybrid and online master’s degrees and advanced certificates in Literacy PK-12, Special Education, PK-12, and TESOL, PK-12. An online Ph.D. in Literacy is offered. Dual certification MS programs are also offered in TESOL/Special Education, Literacy/TESOL, and Special Education/Literacy.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is one of four academic departments in The School of Education at St. John’s University. Its educator preparation programs lead to the Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Science in Education degrees. The department also houses the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Curriculum and Instruction. It imparts a values-based philosophy that promotes service, integrity, compassion, and diversity, and it supports The School of Education’s mission to prepare professionals and scholars who advocate for equitable, ethical education.
Responsibilities
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction seeks a scholar to join our faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a start date of September 1, 2024, or January 1, 2025. The responsibilities associated with the position include:
- Teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level (including doctorate) courses with an emphasis on mixed methods, qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
- Specializations with advanced research methods/strategies are preferred, but not required.
- Demonstrating an interest and willingness to support the University’s efforts to explore and integrate innovative teaching and research methods using Artificial Intelligence (AI) at all levels.
- Serving as a methodological resource and partner to students and colleagues, participating actively in local, state, and national professional organizations that contribute to the mission of the university and standard of excellence common to The School of Education.
- Maintaining an active research agenda.
- Serving on department, school, and university committees.
- Participating in program development and assessment.
- Advising students.
- Seeking external grant funding.
- Engaging in service to the program, school, university, and profession.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- An earned doctorate in Education or a related field (before the start date). Applicants who expect to earn their doctorates in Spring 2025 will also receive consideration.
- Experience teaching research methods at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, and mentoring students with quantitative and mixed-method designs.
- Evidence of expertise in research methodologies drawing on forms of qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed methodologies. Additionally, we seek applicants with a scholar-practitioner-community orientation and professional experience in human development.
- Experience utilizing digital tools of the field to support research methodologies.
- Specializations with advanced research methods/strategies are preferred, but not required.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in The School of Education at St. John’s University is seeking applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor of Childhood Education. The purpose of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is to prepare teachers for certification in their respective fields while imparting a values-based philosophy that promotes service, integrity, compassion and diversity.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction seeks a scholar to join our faculty as a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a start date of September 1, 2024, or January 1, 2025. The responsibilities associated with the position include:

- Be able to design and deliver instruction that meets standards for Childhood Education in person and/or online

- Demonstrate a commitment to anti-racist pedagogies
- Demonstrate and enact culturally relevant pedagogies
- Engage in effective use of technology for online learning
- Show evidence of critical reflection
- Hold a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction or Teacher Education (or closely related field with a focus in Childhood Education)
- Applicants who expect to earn their doctorates in Spring 2025 will receive consideration
- Have at least three years of experience as a PK-12 educator
Additional preferences for candidates include:
- Record of teaching at the college level
- Knowledge of diverse research methods
- Licensed PK-12 teacher with multiple certifications
- Record of teaching and working in high-need communities
- Record of working with pre-service teacher candidates in the field
- Be familiar with AAQEP and INTASC standards, as well as New York State K-12 pedagogy standards

Assistant Professor Special Education, Tenure Track
Job description
The Programs in Special Education in the Department of Education Specialties at St. John’s University is seeking applications for an Assistant tenure track position in Special Education. Responsibilities include teaching graduate level courses in PK-12 Special Education at our Queens campus and online. The position requires the candidate to actively participate in student advisement, maintain an active research agenda, including seeking external grant funding, and contribute to Departmental interdisciplinary activities and initiatives. Engagement in academic service learning and field-supervision of graduate students at practicum sites across the NYC boroughs and Long Island will be required.

Qualifications
The position requires:
- An earned Doctorate in Special Education or related field (before start date)
- A minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience in areas of PK-12 Special Education for students with disabilities in schools and or community/clinical settings
- Candidate must demonstrate strong potential for scholarly activity and research publications
- Expertise/experience in building effective school partnerships/teaching residencies in high needs, urban special education settings with students and families from a range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds is valued
- A strong commitment to anti-racism pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching practices is essential
Preferred qualifications:
- Prior higher education teaching experience and research in autism spectrum disorders and/or effective practices in special education assessment and literacy for students with disabilities
- Knowledge of innovative online pedagogies
