In recent years, as interest in eSports and video gaming has surged, St. John’s University has steadily grown its resources and opportunities in this dynamic space. It all began in 2018 with the creation of a dedicated eSports area in the Technology Commons, complete with high-performance gaming computers for both recreational and competitive use. Since then, the University has consistently upgraded its gaming PCs and enhanced the eSports rooms to ensure students have access to the latest technology and a cutting-edge gaming experience.

That same year, St. John’s students began competing in eSports tournaments through the BIG EAST Conference, while faculty and staff across the University launched research initiatives exploring topics like eSports management, marketing, and the health and wellness of gamers.

Building on this foundation, the Department of Sport Management introduced an undergraduate course in 2019 focused on the management and administration of eSports, marking a significant step in integrating eSports into the academic curriculum. Expanding on this momentum, St. John’s has since developed a Game Development & Emerging Media undergraduate degree program, which focuses on the creation, design, and study of the gaming industry as a whole. Looking ahead, St. John’s University remains committed to expanding academic, research, and competitive opportunities in eSports and video gaming, empowering students to thrive in this fast-growing industry.
