St. John’s Alumnus Sees Finance Career as a Call to Aid Others

“My parents were immigrants to the United States from Guyana, and they had no idea about managing their finances,” he said. “A savings account or cash stashed in the back of a drawer was what they knew.”

“As I came to learn about markets and their crucial role in the growth of capital, I knew this was a passion of mine—to help families and individuals best prepare themselves for their financial future,” he explained.

He cited another reason for his career choice that, for him, is just as crucial. “Becoming a financial trader at a major hedge fund is my dream. I simply love trading financial products and find the entire profession fascinating.”

Currently, Mr. Outar is employed in the auditing department of an accounting firm. “I am learning a lot and I’m glad to gain experience in accounting. Obtaining a better understanding of accounting is important to me as it is directly connected with finance and serves as the building blocks for all facets in business.” 

Mr. Outar discovered St. John’s University was the perfect place to begin the pursuit of his dream, and he subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance in January 2024 from The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. He was honored as a Poets&Quants “2024 Best & Brightest Business Major.”

“When I started looking into different universities, I saw the program at St. John’s and was intrigued,” he recalled. “I looked through the coursework and was excited by many of the offerings in the finance major. I also liked the fact that the faculty had extensive field experience, as well as sought-after certifications, such as those needed to become a chartered financial analyst, certified public accountant, and certified financial planner.”

Mr. Outar saved particular praise for Zenu Sharma, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Economics and Finance, Tobin College. “I was lucky enough to have Professor Sharma for three courses while I was a student at St. John’s, and each time was more invigorating than the one before it. She is one of the most compassionate, knowledgeable, and personable teachers I had in my entire academic career. She became more than a professor to me—she was a role model whom I will always remember.”

Said Dr. Sharma of Mr. Outar, “Matthew possesses a brilliant mind. He is quick-witted, sincere, and a very hard-working student with an exceptional work ethic. He never showed up to class unprepared, he helped other students, and he maintained great relationships with his peers. I have a lot of respect for Matthew, and I wish him a wonderful career and life.”
