Study Abroad Ignites Transformative Breakthroughs: Global Ambassadors, Spring 2026

The Office of International Education’s (OIE) Global Ambassador program is an exciting leadership initiative that empowers study abroad alumni to share their transformative experiences with the St. John’s University community. Global Ambassadors play a key role in encouraging students who may be reluctant to travel abroad by offering guidance, firsthand experiences, and assurance.

“My study abroad experience was incredibly fulfilling and transformative. During my time abroad, I grew in independence, confidence, faith, and self-understanding while navigating new cultures and environments. I had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe, including France, Italy, Austria, Spain, and Czech Republic, and each place left a lasting impact on me. The friendships and memories I made in Rome during those four months will stay with me for a lifetime. Because of how meaningful this experience was, I am eager to share my perspective and encourage other students to step outside their comfort zones and pursue study abroad!”

“I had an incredibly meaningful experience studying abroad in Rome, where I was able to balance my academic responsibilities while fully immersing myself in Italian culture. While abroad, I completed both Italian language sessions, which allowed me to strengthen my language skills and engage more deeply with daily life in Rome.
As an Ozanam Scholar, I also participated in weekly service and community work with local communities in need at a service site called Donna Di Maria. This experience was especially impactful, as it allowed me to connect with the community while living out the Vincentian values of service and compassion.
In addition, I truly enjoyed the day trips that allowed us to explore smaller cities throughout Italy, giving me a broader perspective of the country beyond Rome.
Studying abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow more independent and confident. It taught me that life does not have to feel like a routine—life can be something we learn to romanticize through new experiences, cultures, and connections.
I also remained actively involved on campus, participating in activities such as pasta-making classes, Italian movie nights, and attending weekly Mass held near the school. These experiences helped me build community and feel truly connected during my time abroad.
Overall, studying abroad was a transformative experience, and I’m excited about the opportunity to share my experiences as a Global Ambassador and encourage other students to step outside their comfort zones.”

“As an Ozanam scholar and St. John’s student, I participated in community-based service learning, placing me in an organization designed to support refugees. Throughout my work in this program, I participated in a variety of sports and other games, designed to build friendships and a sense of community among refugees looking for support.
Between my work with the refugee organization and my overall time abroad, I was able to immerse myself in French culture, let go of my personal biases, and develop a stronger appreciation for the differences of other cultures. My studying abroad experiences have not only prepared me to be a more focused and diligent student, but have also granted me the gift of becoming a global citizen that appreciates the beauty and diversity of all cultures.”

“When I decided to study abroad, I expected new places and exciting experiences, and I found them. I was stepping into the unknown, and I didn’t realize that the very moments that made me feel vulnerable would become the ones that shaped me the most. I learned to navigate new cities, build meaningful friendships across cultures, and trust my own voice.
Studying abroad didn’t just show me the world, it also showed me who I could become. It gave me confidence, resilience, and memories that continue to inspire me.
Studying abroad also opens the door to new places, new cultures, and new perspectives. Every day brings opportunities to explore unfamiliar streets, try new foods, and connect with people from around the world. Along the way, you gain confidence and independence. You learn to adapt, to speak up, and to navigate new environments with courage. Even the challenges become part of the experience, helping you grow in ways that last far beyond your time abroad.
Studying abroad isn’t just about where you go, it’s about who you become. The friendships, memories, and skills you gain will stay with you long after you return home.”
