Living Our Values

As a Catholic and Vincentian University, our core values are woven into every aspect of our University and focus on six tenets: Truth, Love, Respect, Opportunity, Excellence, and Service.

Jasiel Martin-Odoo headshot
Value in Action

Opportunity

“As early as my time at St. John’s, and later as I worked in different spaces, I could identify what I cared about—and that was supplying underrepresented business founders with access to capital.”

Gina Harrow Standing At Podium
Value in Action

Service

“Embrace uncertainty. The road is not always easy. Never giving up, and staying focused on goals, is how you get through life’s challenges. Absorb the life lessons that St. John’s offers and always be ready to serve.”

Tiffany Easton
Value in Action

Respect

"It’s all about a sense of belonging and I belong here. St. John’s welcomes students from all over the world and, conversely, encourages its students to travel the world and experience the homes of so many of the cultures found in Queens."

Value in Action

Service

"As the product of a Catholic University, and as someone whose whole education was founded on the Catholic value of helping others, when I saw what was going on I wanted to do something."

Taryn Delanie Smith ’21CCPS, ’21MS
Value in Action

Excellence

"The professors really want you to succeed. I worked full time, and they were flexible and understanding. They didn’t give me passes or an easy out. They just gave me the tools. I would not be who I am today without St. John’s.”

Rev. Joseph G. Marina, S.J., Ph.D., M.Div. ’86C, ’90GEd
Value in Action

Love

"The University of Scranton, like St. John’s University, is a school that with such authenticity and passion believes in its mission and works to carry out that mission every day and in every way possible."
