The Office of Postgraduate Professional Development Programs at St. John’s University is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art training opportunities for professionals in the community who are interested in continuing education and professional development training. We provide specialized certificate training programs in specific areas of professional practice.
We are approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to offer continuing education programs for psychologists, and by the New York State Department of Education to provide training in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting and School Violence Prevention and Intervention training workshops.
Aware of its role as a leading educational institution and its responsibility to the community it serves, particularly the professional community, the Office of Postgraduate Professional Development Programs was created to develop training opportunities for SJU alumni and other professionals in the community interested in pursuing additional training to enhance their professional standing.
Part of the Office’s mission is to encourage and promote a more accurate and responsive understanding among practitioners of the population they are likely to treat. We offer a dynamic and interdisciplinary structure that engages scholars and accomplished practitioners in discussions of critical issues and best practices. Through our continuing education workshops, conferences, and certificate programs, we collaborate with local professional organizations to facilitate the cross-fertilization of ideas and training through both formal and informal gatherings at our various facilities.

St. John’s University’s Office of Postgraduate Professional Development Programs, in collaboration with Montclair State University, presents the Adoption Initiative, which encourages active participation from scholars, professionals, and researchers to shed light on the adoption process. As more and more families choose adoption, they face a wide range of issues for which they may be unprepared. The Adoption Initiative works to increase awareness and understanding in the professional and academic communities about these challenges, so that families have more resources to help them through the process.
Since 2000, the Initiative has organized biennial conferences that address adoption issues from a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, and multicultural perspective. At each conference, a scholarship is given to a current graduate student who is conducting research on an adoption-related topic, and a recognition award is given to a recent doctoral graduate with an adoption-related dissertation, along with an invitation to the Initiative’s biennial meeting.
The conferences also offer publication and continuing education opportunities. For more information about upcoming biennial conferences, please visit AdoptionInitiative.org.

We have prepared special journal issues to ensure a wider dissemination of the papers presented at our conferences, all of which are published in the Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless. Those interested in copies of these manuscripts should contact the journal directly.
The Handbook of Adoption includes information presented at the conferences, along with chapters from prominent scholars and professionals in the field of adoption.
We have also prepared conference DVDs and make them available to the community at large, particularly during the biennial conference.
