Postgraduate Professional Development Programs

What We Do

We offer a dynamic and interdisciplinary structure that engages scholars and accomplished practitioners in discussions of critical issues and best practices relevant to the population we serve. Through our continuing education workshops, conferences, and certificate programs, we collaborate with local professional organizations to facilitate the cross-fertilization of ideas and training through both formal and informal gatherings at our various facilities. We offer Postdoctoral Certificates training in Forensic Psychology and workshops in Child Abuse Identification/Reporting and School Violence Prevention.

The Office of Postgraduate Professional Development Programs at St. John’s University is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art training opportunities for professionals in the community who are interested in continuing education and professional development training. We provide and/ or co-sponsor specialized training programs in specific areas of professional practice throughout the year and remain committed to presenting relevant, comprehensive, and practical information to practitioners.

We are approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to offer continuing education programs for psychologists and by the New York State Education Department  (NYSED) to fulfill requirements for licensing renewal. We are also approved by NYSED to provide training in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting and School Violence Prevention and Intervention training workshops.

Mission

Aware of its role as a leading educational institution and its responsibility to the community it serves, particularly the professional community, the Office of Postgraduate Professional Development Programs was created to develop training opportunities for SJU alumni and other professionals in the community interested in pursuing additional training to enhance their professional standing. As part our mission, we encourage and promote a more accurate and responsive understanding among practitioners of the population they are likely to serve by engaging in continuous learning and explorations of mental health and forensic issues affecting our community.

Continuing Education Programs

The St. John's University's Office of Postgraduate Professional Development is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Our Office maintains responsibility for all CE programs and their contents. For those interested in a more specialized continuing education experience, we also offer a series of modules on specialized topics (e.g., Postdoctoral Certificate Programs in forensic Psychology in Civil and Criminal Laws, treatment and assessment of the diverse community, innovative approaches to assessing linguistic diverse populations, and adoption issues).

Our goal is to provide psychologists and other mental health professionals with the latest information and skills in both theory and practice to advance their professional careers. In this context, we work in close collaboration with other educational and professional institutions that are committed to presenting relevant, comprehensive, and practical information to practitioners, to ensure that programs developed or sponsored by our Office address relevant and timely issues likely to transform their practice delivery. Presenters are expected to include relevant information related to issues of intersectionality of culture, language, gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientations, etc. that are likely to impact on the assessment and treatment of patients in our highly diverse communities.

Updated as of July 23, 2024

In keeping with its basic mission, St. John's University's Office of Postgraduate Professional Development Programs, in collaboration with Montclair State University encourages active participation from scholars, professionals, and researchers, some of whom are also members of the adoption triad, to shed light on the adoption process. As more and more families choose adoption, they are likely to face a wide range of issues for which they may be unprepared. The Adoption Initiative works to increase awareness and understanding in the professional and academic communities about these challenges, so that families have more resources to help them through the process.

Since 2000, the Initiative has organized conferences/workshops that address adoption issues from a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, and multicultural perspectives which have resulted in several publications, including special issues in the Journal of Social Distress and Homeless and a comprehensive volume entitled The Handbook of Adoption: Implications for Researchers, Practitioners, and Families. These publications include information presented at our conferences, along with invited chapters from prominent scholars and professionals in the field of adoption.
