Clinical Health Professions

What We Do

The Department of Clinical Health Professions (CHP) teaches students the knowledge, attitudes and skills required for contemporary clinical pharmacy practice.

Lectures, the multisensory programs offered by the Resource Center, plus individual and group conferences with faculty, physicians and preceptors, give students the knowledge required to be a drug advisor on a health care team. The professional attitude, communication techniques and skills essential for health practitioners who wish to apply academic knowledge to practical situations are developed by participating in health care settings in the last professional year. This base of knowledge is further expanded through interaction with patients, physicians, nurses, paraprofessionals and pharmacists.

Utilization of the Community Pharmacy Laboratory and primary health care settings, including community pharmacies, allows students to become familiar with the legal, administrative and clinical aspects of successful pharmacy practice. In addition, other clinical training sites are used as resources for student instruction in therapeutic drug monitoring – providing drug information, patient interviewing and education. These sites include major metropolitan area medical centers, community hospitals and clinics, and institutions emphasizing the care of specific patient populations (e.g., pediatric, psychiatric, geriatric care).

On the graduate level, the objective of the Department of Clinical Health Professions is to prepare Doctor of Pharmacy students for leadership roles in clinical pharmacy practice. Individual programs are designed to provide students with the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become an effective practitioner in the clinical setting.
