What We Do
The University’s Department of Educational Administration and Supervision is set up to provide carefully designed opportunities and the highest-quality education for students who are preparing for various administrative, supervisory and leadership roles in school districts and other educational constituencies.
To achieve success on the personal and community levels, today’s education administrators must be adequately trained in key aspects of education, including the community, society and service. Accordingly, the University’s Department of Educational Administration and Supervision is set up to provide carefully designed opportunities and the highest-quality education for students who are preparing for various administrative, supervisory and leadership roles in school districts and other educational constituencies.
Additionally, the Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership offers programs in teacher education, curriculum and instruction, and educational leadership. This program leads to an Advanced Certificate and a Doctor of Education degree in Instructional Leadership.

The Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership (DAIL) at St. John’s University offers an Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership to qualified students, with the option of joining a doctoral cohort in several locations within the New York Metropolitan area. A cohort typically consists of students who progress through their program as a group.
The Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership is a 60-credit program. Candidates with advanced graduate work from a State registered and accredited program may transfer in up to 15 credits toward the Ed.D. Degree. Transfer credits may be from a variety of disciplines such as Educational Administration, School Counseling, Sociology, Bilingual Education, or Special Education.
You and your colleagues will learn at an ideal location with the most desired schedule for course delivery. (Please note that a portion of the program must be completed on the Queens campus.)
Admission requirements include a review of transcripts, satisfactory scores on the GRE, and a successful interview with Department faculty.
The cohort model allows students:
- to receive individualized guidance from faculty advisors,
- to have a finite degree plan in place,
- to build social and professional networks with their fellow cohort peers,
- to have institutional and academic support throughout the duration of the program,
- to complete a research study that contributes to current research and practice in instructional leadership,
- to present their work at the Departmental Annual Doctoral Symposium and
- to receive support with professional publishing and conference presentation.
