As a Clinical Pharmacy Manager of Ambulatory Care at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Melissa O’Brien ’10Pharm.D. strives to improve the lives of patients at one of the largest medical centers in the world.
“I want to provide our patients with the best services possible on a daily basis,” said O’Brien, who focuses on direct patient care in an internal medicine practice. “In my role, I perform medication therapy management, educate patients about their medicines, and promote disease prevention.”
O’Brien says the University’s Vincentian mission taught her empathy, an emotion she relies upon working at a hospital that is in a federally-declared medically underserved area. “With the principles St. John’s instilled in me,” she said, “I’m proud to act as an advocate for a community that does not always have a voice.”
Today, O’Brien serves as an alumni mentor through both the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences’ Alumni Mentoring Program and the St. John’s chapter of the international professional pharmacy fraternity (LKS), of which she is a member. “Through my continued work with the University and LKS, I am able to motivate and inspire the development of future pharmacists on both a personal and professional level.”
